See? The pain of airport security DOES work!
The article in full (yes, it is only four paragraphs) from http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/354145_oddproposal08.html

Airport security changes Canadian man's plan for wedding proposal

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia -- A Prince George man thought he had the perfect way to propose to his high school sweetheart.

Instead of popping the question on a moonlit Caribbean beach this week, though, Aaron Tkachuk, 24, wound up proposing to Jennifer Rubadeau, also 24, at an airport security screening station.

A screener at the Prince George airport, Adam Buhler, insisted on having a closer look at the contents of a small box in the toe of a sock. Inside the box was a white gold, diamond and ruby ring.

Tkachuk decided to propose on the spot, and other travelers and security personnel cheered as Rubadeau said yes.

Can I hear an "Awwwwww."

I bet he would have rather done it on the beach.

4. Right, they should have clearly seen what that metallic object was
on the Xray screen. It was too small and the wrong shape to be anything dangerous. These people were morons who got curious, "Lemme see the ring! How much did it set you back?"

I doubt he'll forgive them for ruining the fantasy.

6. Wouldn't it have been easier to put it in his backpack
or pack it deep into his checked baggage?

7. Theft from baggage is endemic
For decades, the rule of thumb has been absolute: DO NOT put anything of value in your checked baggage. The airline industry only insures bags and their contents to $250 (in the US, I don't know about Canada.) Had the ring been stolen, there is little he could do, as the first step would be to prove that he had the ring in there in the first place.
