Wal-Mart to stop selling computers with Linux OS
Back November I bragged on Wal-mart for carrying Everex's TC2502 gPC, the first mass-market under $200 desktop computer. The low-cost PC featured gOS, a custom distribution of Ubuntu Linux. At the time, reports circulated that the new computer had completely sold out at the 630 Wal-Marts that offered the product.

Now this from Wal-Mart:

Computers that run the Linux operating system instead of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows didn't attract enough attention from Wal-Mart customers, and the chain has stopped selling them in stores, a spokeswoman said Monday.

"This really wasn't what our customers were looking for," said Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien.

1. Hardly a surprise that Wal-Mart customers would be afraid of Linux

After all, isn't that the very definition of "conservative" -- to conserve, stay the same?

2. My friends use Linux
Another way of making sure the big boys get all the goodies, I'd say.

3. What do you expect? Wal-Mart is a department store.
They cater to the masses. And Linux has, what, 1% market share? I'm surprised they gave it a shot at all.

I'm more baffled, though, to find several Linux-oriented products at Wal-Mart's website (all books and CD-ROMs), where a specialty electronics store like Best Buy (first thing that popped into my head) has absolutely nothing Linux-oriented on theirs.
