Iraq cleric Sadr explains absence

Last Updated: Friday, 7 March 2008, 19:19 GMT

The Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has explained why he has not been seen in public for more than nine months - and acknowledged splits in his movement.

He said he missed his followers "too much" but that every "commander needed to be away for a while to worship".

He has reportedly resumed his religious studies to gain the title of ayatollah.

The statement comes two weeks after the cleric renewed a unilateral ceasefire his powerful Mehdi Army militia has been observing for the past six months. snip

In December, a senior aide, Salah al-Ubaidi, said Moqtada Sadr had not been seen in public since 25 May because he resumed his religious studies at a Shia seminary in Najaf.

2. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas
He's probably hanging out at the casinos, eating lots of sausges and pork rinds, while cavorting with young women.

Think "You ain't seen nothing yet"

Because if there is one person from Iraq that can pull together a united front against the invaders and occupiers,

I think it just may be Moqtada Sadr.

Iraqis are waiting for a leader.

Moqtada Sadr could be it.

12. The odds are that he is doing just what he says.
He is young and religious, and advancing spiritually means (in that religion and as in most professions) studying and becoming more expert and knowledgeable. Sistani is old and revered and a PhD-equivalent with many years of further studies, and thus, by merit, the top guy. His successor has to be at least PhD-in-theology. The Catholics don't grab their next Popes from the ordinary priests, only the top ranks of the hierarchy. The process and titles in Islam are different, but the same sorts of criteria for worthiness apply. Without this step, he would be suspect as the next in line.

15. NNN0LHI - as you can see by the responses, USAmericans don't really care
.
.
.

Their government made an illegal, and unprovoked invasion and occupation of a country that was not only sovereign, but of NO threat to the USA

And 5 years later, millions of lives lost, and Trillions of dollars wasted,

The USAmericans still sit on their ass saying "what could we do?"

Have a SPINE would be my suggestion.

Good luck with that idea,

Right?
