He said that his primary fight distracted them and took energy away so that Nixon was able to beat him easier.

That said, there were a lot of other dynamics going on then--like the Vietnam war and a Dem being in office who made it worse. People wanted a change and Nixon promised Peace with Honor. ha. ha. ha.
