Question about spouses coming to the podium while husbands apologize
It just occurred to me today... We've seen a lot of this lately, the forbearing wife standing quietly next to the husband in silent support (or whatever it is) while he confesses his misdeeds -- or in Larry Craig's case, denies them -- so my question is...

Why was Hillary Clinton not there with Bill when he made his public apology?

1. Dunno.
But if any husband of mine got caught purchasing the services of a $1500 hooker, I'd be somewhat disinclined to just stand there while he did his little mea culpa for the cameras. If I did, though, I'd be also be holding a jar containing his 'nads in formaldehyde.

5. lol
I texted my wife today and said, "If I'm ever Governor and I get caught with a prostitute I won't ask you to show up at the podium with me." She texted back in about 30 microseconds with, "Ya cause I'll be at the press room across town talkin about your std's and your fondness for anal with a dildo"

That's the lady I married!

16. I don't think Mrs. Spitzer is, either. She is a mother of three teenagers. Met her husband at law
school. Married something like twenty years.

19. I was out of line.
Should not have said that.

It's a very personal decision and I feel for all the women that get forced into this position by the puerile decisions of their men.

honestly, I'd go after him with a baseball bat - but that's me - too hard to figure out what is going on in someone else's marriage - if she's not being beaten or blackmailed it's her own choice

4. I agree with Charles Krauthammer for the first time in my life--
he said tonight that making your humiliated wife stand beside you as a prop should be a hanging offense.

he should have been man enough to have stood alone.

18. I don't think he "made" her. She went to law school, too. She probably figures it will
be useful to her when she files for divorce.

He's loaded, they've got three teen aged daughters and a twenty year history. She certainly is an aggrieved party, here.

If she decides to go down the Ka-Ching Road to the Gravy Train, I wouldn't blame her.

It's up to them, though...maybe she just wanted to send a signal to the kids that they'll get through this.

23. She looked extremely unhappy at that podium
And I don't blame her one bit. If she wanted to be there, fine, be there. If not, she shouldn't be obligated to publicly "stand by her man".

29. She has plenty of reason to be unhappy. The choice to stand there, however,
is hers. I don't think anyone but she can understand or judge her choice.

31. She would have looked a bit out of place if she'd been displaying porcelain veneers and waving like
a beauty contest winner. An "unhappy look" was probably the appropriate face to be wearing in that circumstance, I'd say.

Like I say, I don't think anyone forced her to do anything. He most likely asked her, and she agreed. Of course, none of us are inside that marriage, we have no clue as to how they live their lives.

8. Maybe she didn't know the words to "Stand by my man."
 Maybe she just didn't fucking care to do that. They look ridiculous if anyone is asking me. I would stand next to him with a rolling pin!

17. Glad Hillary Was Not There
I for one give props to Hillary for making Bill man up and face the nation on his own, he screwed up on his own - why should the wife endure the humiliation of a public spectacle while enduring what must be an emotional roller coaster. That's total BS.

20. it was a little different in Bill's case because it was dragged out for months
before he admitted to it. the public went through everything that happened before including all the stuff about the blue dress.

in the case of spitzer , craig, etc they had their public appearance during the time the news hit the media.

21. My memory of that time is slightly hazy but....
Wasn't President Clinton's public apology a televised address from the Oval Office or something? If so, then first spouses don't usually feature when a President gives a televised address from the Oval Office because it is meant to be the President directly addressing the nation face to face. The First Spouse and other members of the staff are usually in the room but out of sight from the camera
