LONDON, England (AP) -- Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella, who turned such literary works as "The English Patient," "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Cold Mountain" into acclaimed movies, has died. He was 54.

Anthony Minghella won an Oscar for his direction of "The English Patient."

Minghella's death was confirmed Tuesday by his agent, Judy Daish. According to reports, Mingella died of a hemorrhage after a routine operation on his neck.

"The English Patient," the 1996 World War II drama, won nine Academy Awards, including best director for Minghella, best picture and best supporting actress for Juliette Binoche.

Based on the celebrated novel by Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje, the movie tells of a burn victim's tortured recollections of his misdeeds in time of war.

2. "The Talented Mr. Ripley" is one of my favorite films.
And I've been meaning to watch "Cold Mountain" again. Sad news!

Any word on what he died from?

3. This is awful
My sympathies to his family.

Also, HOPEFULLY the family sue the doctors. What type of doctor allows their patient to Hemorrage after an operation. I hope they win ALOT of money. SHAME ON THE DOCTORS.

START THE IMPEACHMENT

5. The death of Stevens is sad as well.
I hate that the man was such a perfectionist. He left so little of his incredible work behind.

6. so true
I met him once at a small convention in KC. I told him how Rocketeer got standing ovations at 2 different showings that I'd seen. He got kinda misty eyed and said "I wish I could have seen that."
