The bastard got caught with large money in his freezer.

All kinds of people are going to jail for this right now.

He is an embarrassment to the Party.

And I will be all too happy to see his ass frog-marched to wherever it needs to be sent.

There was money in his freezer.

Crook....?

He shouldn't be given anything until the investigation is done. Right now he has a scandal hanging over his head and addressing that should be his only concern.

If you think he is entitled to the seat, stop and ask yourself what you'd be saying if it were a Republican in the same situation.

bribes! THAT damages the Democratic Party, and I am part of that Party!

I slammed the Pugsfor letting people like DeLay and Cunningham, and Foley stayin their positions, and I don't feel any different about any Dem! If he can't at least give some plausable excuse for what has been found, he does NOT deserve a position on any committee!

And if you are going to talk about the people who re-elected him, you must remember it's Louisiana! Certainly not known for their honesty in politics!

That doesn't mean we should be silent. This "innocent until proven guilty" business is about the law, not about the wisest choice for committee assignment. Unless he provides an explanation, he should sit in his own stew without assignment.

Using your logic, the American people re-elected George Bush to the White House. Does that mean he doesn't have to answer for anything he did in his first term?

If you don't apply the same standard to both sides, you're a hypocrite.

Jefferson is answerable to the people of his district. Bush is answerable to the people of his "district."

They are answerable to the people who voted on them. Are you going to show me where my supposed hypocrisy is in saying that is who they are answerable to? Or are you not going to try to show me where it is?

Of course William Jefferson hasn't been charged with a crime.

But after skimming through this thread, I'll just accept what one poster said. We are from Louisiana we are guilty until we prove innocence. Guess that's just part of America's view of us. And to think there are people on DU who actually think America is going to do something for New Orleans and Louisiana.

HOWEVER...if he cares about his constituents, his family and the reputation of the Democratic Party in these very chaotic times, he needs to give us an explanation before he can move on.

They are still finding money in oddball places all around his house and his widow and his kids are afraid to sell the house cuz they don't know where else he may have hid money.

However...that kind of behavior is not normal and not recommended.

19. This poll & it's commentary are
a sad reflection on those who somehow think of themselves as liberals, progressives or some combination of the two.

If a person, not even charged with anything, is, to be presumed guilty of some offense. is not enough, disparaging the DEMOCRATS that re-elected him, is beyond comprehension.

I know I'm old and probably considered a bit out of touch, by many here, but, does one not wonder why these allegations remain suspended in air for nearly two years, without any follow up info as to the progress of the supposed investigation ? What can one surmise is the reason Rep. Jefferson's official paperwork has not been returned or litigated before the courts as to the legality of their seizeure in the first place? Have there been charges leveled against those that are alleged to have given him the money ? Who are they ? Do YOU know ?

Could it be possible that the justice dept. of Abugonzales are rigging the dice, in order to keep this cloud of supposed bi-partisan wrong doing, going on to, make good progressives so anxious to please and prove they are " fair minded " that, they give up a bit of their sense of fairness to please and re-assure others ?

Out smarted every time...... :evilfrown:

21. Congressman Jefferson
The man has not been convicted of anything and he was re-elected in his district. That said, the the potential charges are very serious. If I was the in the Congressional leadership, I would consider recommend deferring perminate committee assignment pending the outcome of the investigation. While the investigation was in progress I would assign him temporarily to sub-committees that are less visible to the electorate. I do not know, thought, if the rules of the House allow such action.

Anyone who wants to play footsie with someone like him just because he has a 'd' behind his name is going to get burned.

i had the same thought about DeLay when he was indicted, BEFORE his trial.. he needed to go.

What was your opinion of whether DeLay should have stayed on in congress BEFORE his trial?

36. Delay was indicted... Jefferson has not been... So far... there isn't even an accusation against ...
...him. I don't give a shit if he has a D next to his name but I do care about the rule of law. The law states that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty... According to our Constitution,

"Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behavior, and, with the Concurrence of two-thirds, expel a Member."

and...

"They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place."

... I see no provision in here that limits a Representatives role in Congress due to speculation of a crime especially with no formal charges even being offered. This of course does apply to to vile Mr. Delay. I don't think Delay should have stayed on because I didn't think he should have been in Congress in the first place. My objections to Delay were much broader than his finagling of the redistricting in Texas. Though I was glad they finally "got him" on at least one of his crimes, this issue was sort of akin to busting Capone for tax evasion.

Jefferson may be corrupt... I don't know... I agree the story does sound bad... $90k in the freezer does sound bad but I don't know Jefferson's side of the story and he has not even been indicted in any crime. Until then I will presume he's innocent... I know... call me a radical... but really, what good is Democracy if no one practices it?

and i would be saying that for a repub as well as a Democrat. We tend to indict everyone immediatly. Now, the facts in this case make me lean toward guilty (cash in the freezer, does he just deal in cold hard cash?)and if he won't cooperate with officials then maybe he should be presumed guilty, but that is just my humble opinion.

There is no presumption of anything... I also have to wonder about all the events that took place... I mean they raided his home, his Congressional office and no charges....

You would think the evidence in his home as they report it would be enough to charge him....

Like he doesn't trust our government to take care of us...or he has inside knowledge of an impending bank failure...or inside knowledge of another 911?
He is innocent until proven guilty.
I, too, have a cash stash that isn't in the bank. So if someone finds it then I am guilty?
Of course mine isn't that large...but it is a goodly sum that would probably put me in jail for suspected SOMETHING.

The committee assignment in question has oversight over FEMA.

Not putting him on the committee disenfranchises the poor of New Orleans who have already been treated like dirt.
