I'm re-reading "Hiroshima" by John Hersey...
I assume that many of you read it in high school. If you didn't or even if you did, PLEASE read this book! It's non-fiction; it was written by interviewing six Hiroshima survivors in 1945, and what they went through is just unbelievable. (And for those of you who are pressed for time, it's short).

2. What we did to Japan and Germany were war crimes, plain & simple
We slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Dresden, and other cities. For what? So we could achieve victory that much faster? I feel very uneasy about that rationale. For me, the "we were the good guys" argument really doesn't sit very well. Just because they committed horrendous atrocities doesn't excuse some of the actions that we did.

That being said, I'm very glad that we won the war. As bad as some of the the things we've done since, and as bad as * is, it would have been quite a bit worse if Germany and Japan had triumphed.
