From the day she became U.S. secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice has been on the cutting edge of history.
Now the first black woman to hold the job will be greatly responsible for writing the history of U.S. dealings with other nations during the final years of George W. Bush's presidency. It is a huge - and hugely important - task, with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan not going as planned, worries growing about the entire Middle East and support for the United States down among other nations.
Still, Rice is a formidable force in the Bush administration.
She is very close to the president-a political relationship that Forbes magazine once said makes her "the most powerful woman in the world."
She also remains the most popular member of the Bush team, with more favorable public opinion ratings than the president himself.
Once talked about by political experts as a possible presidential candidate, she is now said to be the only member of the Bush White House who might have a significant political future beyond 2008.
A source of great pride when she was named secretary of state, Rice now faces a brighter spotlight than ever.
She also is facing sharper criticism than ever, as she found when she appeared last month before a U.S. Senate committee in a Congress now controlled by Democrats.
Time magazine was especially blunt, declaring on its cover this month that it was time for Rice to get "back to reality . . . to rethink U.S. foreign policy and deal with the world as it is."
