There's no way that those who risked so much for so much power are going to peacefully hand it over. They do not believe in democracy and what this country is supposed to stand for. If McLame wins, they win. If the election is close enough, they'll steal it. It will be close enough, the Gibsons and Stephanopoli of the press are going to make sure of that.

In the unlikely event that they "lose", there's always Martial Law.

The only thing that makes sense in terms of "continuity" is for Darth to select himself again. McLame doesn't have what it takes, he's only in it for the power. No matter how much he flips and flops, having no apparent principles except war, he'll be "selected" but he's not going to be the one driving the bus. Darth will be right there running things.

I really don't see them leaving.
