97-year-old woman in Arizona falls victim to state’s stringent voter ID law.»

A 97-year-old Arizona woman who has voted in every election since 1933 says she won’t be able to vote in November, due to the state’s stringent voter ID law that requires proof of citizenship for those registering to vote and a photo ID when voting. Shirley Preiss was born in 1910 in Kentucky, before the state issued birth certificates. She has no driver’s license or passport. “Preiss said for someone who once lived in a time when women could not vote, the law is a step backwards.”

2. This is interesting.
Are there any situations at all, anywhere, that haven't involved otherwise legitimate voters?

Have these laws ever, even once done what they say they are supposed to do, or have all of them so far resulted in exactly the situation these laws' supporters claim won't happen?

I thought the law was aimed at voter fraud, not undocumented workers...

16. It's part and parcel of voter fraud, but certainly a mere a fraction
It's part and parcel of voter fraud, but certainly a mere a fraction of voter fraud as a whole...

I would think that when someone uses finds an example for voter fraud, they'd go for the obvious ones rather than fictional anecdotes about undocumented workers voting.

The ones that are actually verified as fraud are much more weighted towards documented American workers than towards undocumented workers-- seven cases of undocumented workers engaged in voter fraud over the past fifteen years in Texas-- four cases thrown out. Over 1,100 cases of voter fraud not relevant to undocumented workers.

So undocumented workers are less than 1% of the problem in TX, yes? Yet-- the law is designed to protect us from them? :eyes:

5. I am outraged by this. I had to go through a living hell....
....to prove my own citizenship.

This case should be resolved by affidavits from witnesses who can attest to her background and citizenship. If she voted in the past her citizenship should not be called into question.

I live in AZ and will follow up on this.

6. I wonder if she gets SS benefits?
Wouldn't she have to prove who she is for that?

For those who don't carry an Arizona driver's license but still need to prove their age or identity, an identification card is in order. ID cards are available to all Arizona residents, including infants, for $12. Persons over the age of 65 and those who receive Federal Supplemental Security Income disability checks will have the fee waived.

7. But what ID would she need to get the state ID card?
And in any case, this makes the $12 effectively a poll tax.

20. My guess is that at age 97 she either
Gets SS, or Medicare/medicade or if she is still employed has some sort of employer id. Maybe she is living off her investments, but she would probably have to have some sort of id to access her accounts. As to the $12, I think she qualifies for the over 65 exemption.

8. I love living in West Virginia.
When you register to vote, you have to show proof of residency -- driver's license or passport, utility bill with your local address. You can not be asked to show id at the poll, unless your signature does not match the signature in the polling book.

It's tough for those of us in this backwards, racist, sexist, illiterate backwash of a backwater....

11. It would seem to me that this would hurt Republicans more.
There are may senior citizens that don't drive, probably don't have a photo ID of any sort but vote Republican. I could see how this might backfire big time on them in some areas.

And to think that we had some of our very own justifying and defending this new policy.

Well, better one verified case of voter disenfranchisement than 100 fictional cases of voter fraud... :sarcasm:
