Is there a bicycle rack in the parking lot at your place of employment?
For the longest time, you only saw one bicycle there.

Now that rack is FULL!!!!

And a friend bought a shiny new moped that she keeps locked in it too.

Time to get off my fat ass and join the crowd!! :)

2. Wish I lived closer to work
for a bike to be feasible. And not on an 8-lane interstate. x( :P

We do have several people who drive their motorcycles in, though. Some are women, even. :D

I am looking at possibly getting a bike to tool around town on the weekends though.

13. I could do that
Mine's about 17 miles and on an interstate the whole way. No way would I want to be frail, exposed flesh next to 4 lanes of heavy cars and 18 wheelers.

7. You might be surprised how far some ride to work
Check out the postings on the Commuter board at www.bikeforums.net

Some ride 20 miles one way. :wow:

Lots of good tips and hints for the would-be bike commuter or any cyclist, for that matter... :)

it's the four lanes of traffic each way. x(

19. Women who are taller than me.
Women are unnecessarily put out by high prices. Professional women have to wear dresses and slacks and hose - none of which are condusive to bike (motor or pedal) riding.

And, most places don't have showers, if indeed we could.

Me? I live to far away for pedal power and buses don't run out here. And, I'm too short to hold up a motorcycle (I can hold up a scooter, I think, but not a motorcycle).

3. I leave work at 11 P.M. I see people riding bikes all over town on my drive home AT 11:00 PM!!
Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 12:25 PM by KzooDem
I don't know that I could quantify how may people I have seen riding bikes in the middle of the night BEFORE the whole gas price crisis hit us, but I know it was only occasional. But I do know that I've seen a very perceptable rise in the number of people peddling around in the dark of night.

Besides the fact that I feel bad that people are driven to putting themselves in danger of riding at night, it's scary that so few of them are wearing helmets. :-(

8. Take your bike into the store and walk it around with you...
...when you get accosted by the help, ask to see the manager and then explain you want to keep shopping there, but you don't want your bike stolen.

Be firm, but polite.

I bet you make your point...

14. Here's a semi-annoying thing I do
When the cashier says: "Did you find everything you need?"

Tell them that you weren't able to find a place to park your bicycle.

Sooner or later they'll realize that people spending money there aren't satisfied.

Not all that accessible by bike anyway, due to all the freeways around it.

Fortunately, I get to telecommute :)

16. Why does it matter? They have no SHOWER.

Sorry, but I'd be willing to bike to work if my place had a shower and i did when i worked elsewhere.

But the fact is that If I biked to work and didn't shower there, my job would make up some reason to fire me.

17. Several motorcycles at my wife's place of employeement
I went to pick her up for lunch a few weeks ago and there were 6 motorcycles parked up on the sidewalk. She said that several people switched to save gas.

I CAN tell you this-there are many more people riding the bus these days. It is noticeable the increase.

26. LOL!!
At a car dealer there may be no formal bike racks, but there is certainly no shortage of places to stash one!!

And of all the workplaces you'd think would have employee shower facilities--most dealers don't.

One place I worked our auto tranny guy always rode his bike--no matter what the weather--I think he didn't even own a car. Another tech--the diesel specialist--lived in his car on the property. He was an odd bird who had to be reminded to cash his paychecks.

Ain't no place weirder to work than a car dealer...

34. We have a guy that bought a bicycle from China
It has a battery on it, so there's no pedaling up hills on his way to work. He keeps it in his office.

There's a shower, but it's in the bathroom for the GM & Owner only. I don't think they've ever taken a shower in it, and I think we'd be killed if we even thought about using that bathroom.

21. Yup, but I work at a university, so it's common.
Started riding a bike to work when gas shot over $4.00/gallon here in CA, this is the one issue that makes me feel doomed.

28. Yep, and my bike is parked there most days
I've lost 30 pounds since last year, upped my mileage from 7.5 to about 12.5 each way just to increase the exercise. When I get to work, I cool down, head for the bathroom, change into my office clothes (use a paper towel to remove any additional "glow"), and I'm good to go for the day. Sometimes I put on a quick swipe of deodorant.

This weekend: Seattle to Portland. Whoo hoo!
