The way I see it, there are three possible explanations:
1.They actually think the routine work of the Congress and their feckless "agenda" is more important than restoring the Constitution and addressing the criminal incompetence, corruption and abuse of power by the Bush administration. At this point, given what we know about Bushco's record, it's hard to believe that even Pelosi and Reid could be that spineless, clueless and inept. Which leaves two other options:
2.They're afraid. Bush has been tapping their phones from day one—he knows about their dalliances and crooked real-estate deals, he's got them so thoroughly by the short-and-curlies that they have no choice but to jump when he says jump. Or (possibly also), Bush has announced through back channels that if they push him, he'll push back, attack Iran, declare martial law, cancel the elections, etc.—but if they let it go the elections will go on as planned. If either or both of these possibilities is/are true, then we've been living in a "soft" dictatorship the past 7.5 years, and the Democrats and the American people remain essentially powerless. If Bush no longer rules by consent of the people, he is ipso facto a dictator.
3.Or. OR. The Reid/Pelosi/et al corporate wing of the Democratic party knows what's going on and is just fine with it. That is, the majority of Democrats in congress, and pretty much all of the congressional leadership, are not on the side of the Constitution or the American people, and certainly not on OUR side, to the extent that we represent the progressive wing of the Democratic party. If that's the case, then we live under what is essentially one-party rule, which is just another form of dictatorship.
My money's on some combination of #2 and #3. Carlin was right: it's all a big club, and we're not in it.
