McCain regrets vote against King holiday

By Elisabeth Bumiller and John M. Broder Published: April 4, 2008

MEMPHIS, Tennessee: Hillary Rodham Clinton called for a cabinet-level poverty czar and John McCain said he was wrong to vote a quarter century ago against a federal holiday in memory of Martin Luther King Jr. as both presidential candidates converged here on Friday for the 40th anniversary of King's assassination.

From the Memphis church were King delivered his last sermon on the evening before he was gunned down by James Earl Ray, Clinton gave her support to an idea long advocated by the King family, a cabinet position that she said would be "solely and fully devoted to ending poverty as we know it, that will focus the attention of our nation on this issue and never let it go."

Clinton added: "No more excuses, no more whining, but instead a concerted effort."

At almost the same time on Friday morning, McCain spoke in a steady rain outside the Lorraine Hotel where King was slain, which is now the National Civil Rights Museum. McCain was faced with a scattering of boos when said he had erred in the past when he voted as a freshman in Congress against the Jan. 20 holiday celebrating King.

McCain Defends Stance On Confederate Flag In S.C.

January 16, 2008, 5:29 PM

John McCain's losing 2000 campaign in South Carolina continues to follow him as he travels the state this time around.

At multiple events today in the state, protesters waved Confederate flags and passed out flyers as the candidate's bus arrived -- and one of the protesters asked the senator a question at an event, the Associated Press reports.

The protesters were against McCain's call in April 2000 (after the primary) for the flag to be removed from the top of the statehouse -- even though he sidestepped the question during his primary battle with George W. Bush. At the time, he said not taking the stance during the campaign was a "sacrifice of principle for personal ambition." snip

At the event today, after one of the questioners said he thought taking down the flag was wrong, McCain responded by saying he "could not be more proud of the majority of the people of this state'' who agreed the flag should be removed, according to the AP. He later told reporters, "I believe the issue has been resolved in the minds of the overwhelming majority of the people of South Carolina."
