A parting gift (or is it a parting shot?) from the * Administration:
Parting gift for religious right?

Denogean: Bush plan defines pill, IUD as abortion

Fertilization vs. implantation
ANNE T. DENOGEAN
Tucson Citizen

In its final months, the Bush administration is wrapping up a parting gift for the religious right: an official definition of abortion so sweeping it would include the use of birth control pills and other forms of hormonal contraceptives, as well as intrauterine devices.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services quietly drafted a rule that would put into federal code this radical definition of abortion.

"The basis is ideology," said Rachel Chánes, the Tucson-based vice president of community services for Planned Parenthood Arizona. "We think this is coming from the Bush-appointed ideologues that are in there who are not apologetic about (the department's) stance on being anti-woman, anti-birth control and anti-abortion."
The proposal came to light because somebody leaked it to the public. It expands upon federal law that prohibits entities that receive federal dollars from discriminating against health care providers - institutions and individuals - who refuse to perform, pay for or make referrals for abortions based on moral objections.

The problem is the rule allows the individual or the institution to decide when a pregnancy begins and what constitutes an abortion, rather than relying on the widely accepted scientific definitions of both.

This evil administration must be stopped from implementing this plan.

1. They just can't help themselves, can they?
These must be some eternally angry people.

I am glad as hell that I don't know any of them. I wonder where they come from.

They all must have had a very sorry childhood.

5. They have gone "back" - back to prior to the reformation era when
the Catholic Church absolutely forbid any kind of birth control and considered women on a scale below the animals. This is a total disgrace and what they do not know is that most churches, even rw ones, do not condemn the use of birth control - only the Catholic Church has this on their books yet.

30. Unless all men pledge to procreate, there is no need for Viagra.
Can't let them waste God's seed of future children. Allow Viagra only in fertility clinics.

As with you, this old lady ain't dead yet either, and I'll be damn if I'll sit still just to return to the days of pain, humiliation, and death. I witnessed twice in my life the death of one friend and the horrific painful rupture and infection of another that resulted in infertility. I sure the hell don't intend to watch this happen again.

Shame on them. Even if it's only a wedge issue, shame on them.

28. I did a quick search
but couldn't find any numbers. I did find this:

"Watson Pharmaceuticals, the drug maker, said yesterday that 2003 profit would increase as much as 13 percent, to $1.75 and $1.85 a share, helped by the introduction of a treatment for incontinence. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had expected the company to earn $1.74 a share. The company also expects to benefit from higher demand for its birth control pills and four pain medicines it agreed to buy from Novartis. Total sales this year will be $1.34 billion to $1.44 billion, a gain of as much as 16 percent over the previous year, Watson said. " New York Times (although it was 2003).

I think this a lot of posturing on the part of the Bush White House. I think it was a deliberate leak to keep the "religious base" happy. Believe me, business owns those guys 100% and they are not going to damage that. If anything, it is a weapon to use when Obama wins the election (i.e., if their election fraud fails this year). They will do it in November and Obama will reverse it in January. Mission accomplished - religious right happy with Rethugs, unhappy with Obama.

Why would anyone want to allow the planet to be even more overpopulated? They aren't so stupid that they think people won't have sex.

There are many ways to prevent pregnancy that will spring up out of the gardens of women should this happen.

26. it's a point I use frequently with anti-woman rightwingers
if a woman wants to abort, she will abort. There is absolutely no way at all to stop her. I would rather such women have easy access to actual medical care, rather than doing it themselves. nobody should take a friend or loved one to the ER from pulegone poisoning, much less any of the more... visceral methods used.

I also make sure to point out that in 1968, there were 1.2 abortions - a number that is very likely an underestimate due to lack of information on illegal procedures... compared to 1.3 million yearly in the US, with a much larger population.

legal or not, women who want to abort will do so. So their position is less about "protecting life" than it is punishing women for controlling their own uterus

24. Why do otherwise intelligent people who are mired in religion
want to allow the planet to be even more overpopulated?

That's a good question.

Their thinking (if any) must go something like the following:

God wants us all to "be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1:28).

Besides, if this life is only a brief preparation for the really important afterlife,
then why worry about the planet?

God can provide an exponentially growing food supply if He chooses to do so.

If not, then it will be His will that the sinful multitudes suffer.

41. What those asswipes don't even stop to think about
is that for many women, like myself, bc pills weren't/aren't mainly to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

After my last child was born I had constant bleeding for three months...every single day. I'd get up in the morning, bleed copiously, and it would slow down and finally stop by nightfall.

Next morning the same thing all over again.

I saw a doctor, who gave me a shot of something or other, then put me on bc pills to regulate my screwed up hormones, which was what the problem was.

If bc pills had been illegal or harder to get back then, who knows...I might have had to undergo a hysterectomy or something. I was 22. If that's not permanent birth control, I don't know what is...

How many innocent little unfertilized "children" might I have been "aborting" then, I wonder?

I sincerely hope saner minds prevail in this ridiculous scheme. At this point in my life I'm past childbearing age, but damn it, I want other women younger than I am to have the same freedoms of CHOICE that I had during much of my own youth.
