DUer music lovers might want to avoid Aspen. Condi playing piano in a music competition there.
WASHINGTON, August 2 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will perform on Saturday classical piano compositions during a music festival in Aspen, Colorado, the State Department said.

Rice, 53, is an accomplished pianist. At the age of 15 she performed Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor with the Denver Symphony Orchestra and until college seriously considered to pursue music professionally.

During the performance on Saturday, the top U.S. diplomat will play the first movement of Dvorak's Piano Quintet in A major, B. 155, op. 81, as well as the second movement of Brahms's Piano Quintet in B minor, op. 34, according to the festival's web site.

Rice is not the only U.S. secretary of state to pursue amateur music-making. Thomas Jefferson, the first to hold the office in 1789-1793, was an excellent violinist who played chamber music, especially Baroque trio sonatas.

1. Should Rice's piano playing be judged on it's own merits, or her political views?

3. That apostrophe...it's not needed.

8. Are you sure, it is possessive.
Wouldn't "Sam's eye" be more correct than "Sams eye"?

18. Well, you needed the extra one from the other post!

But for a different reason..."that's" is a contraction of "that is", not a possessive. The apostrophe isn't used for possessives on pronouns.
"Cut off its tail" is proper, "Cut off it's tail" isn't. :D
See what kind of crap you can get from a grammar nazi?
;-)
edit: had to fix my own bungle haha

29. Name the one personal pronoun
that does take an apostrophe in the possessive.

That should be an easy one. :)

20. Is "own merits" not the possession of "it", does it not work that way?
By the way, this has been bothering me, so you picked the right person to pick on.

22. Yes, it is that but the -only- time that "it's" is correct grammar is when it is intended to be
exactly equivalent to "it is"!

I know it's (it is) frustrating; English is a very goofy language, being a poor distillation of many Romance and Germanic tongues. I think there are more exceptions to rules than there are rules. :D

26. So, "its own merits" would be correct since "it is own merits" make little sense?

Rice would be dominated by musicians 1/3 her age.

11. Too bad for her and for us that she didn't follow her muse.
However, with US foreign relations deteriorating, especially in the Middle East, why is our SOS engaging in a music competitions instead of doing her job? Honestly, why do we have to pay her with our tax dollars?

32. Shrug. *I* would listen. I don't think it would mean I'd have to agree with her politics!

There's an astronomer much beloved here in the UK called Patrick Moore. He's widely regarded as a national treasure. He's as right-wing as they get! Luckily he makes no fuss about it and gets on with the astronomy when he's on TV, which is good.
