BRAD: Missouri Voter Refuses Illegal Demand to Show Photo ID at Poll, Gets Thrown in Jail
Missouri Voter Refuses Illegal Demand to Show Photo ID at Poll, Gets Thrown in Jail
by Brad Friedman an hour ago - http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6252

This story is unfrickin'-believable. Or maybe it isn't. It took place in Thor Hearne (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1159656) country, after all. And though she didn't get arrested and thrown in jail, a similar incident happened to the Missouri Secretary of State during the 2006 election.

A voter in Kansas City on Tuesday --- one I happen to know, because he's an Election Integrity advocate in the Show Me State --- was arrested and sent to jail after he refused to show a driver's license at the polling place before attempting to vote during the state's Primary Election.

The voter is Phil Lindsey of ShowMeTheVote.org (http://www.showmethevote.org/) and he posted the details of his harrowing tale over at DemocraticUnderground.com, where he posts as "galloglas", after being released on Tuesday night.

He told me, via email late last night, that he's been in close touch with MO's Secretary of State Robin Carnahan following the incident, and that ....

Voting absentee
http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/13608

Voting-rights provocateur Phil Lindsey went and got himself arrested Tuesday while trying to cast a ballot in Independence, he says.

He tried to vote, he says, when poll workers asked him to provide an ID with a signature, which is not required under state law. He refused, and was eventually detained, he says, for disrupting the polling place.

"Either these people are not trained well enough to handle the job, or somebody's doing what they shouldn't out there," Lindsey said he told Jackson County election officials.

UPDATE: Charlene Davis, one of the directors of the Jackson County Election Board, said Lindsey was disruptive at the polling place -- "screaming" at election judges.

"They were scared to death," Davis said. "They're all over 70...one gal thought she was having a heart attack. I do think they acted properly. They were confused over the identification, but they called.

"He was disruptive at the poll, and that's a violation of the law."

More of Phil's side of the story here (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/6/9488/29311/996/563441).

10. "Provocateur" I like the sound of that
Of course, since the paper isn't any smarter than the rubes they're trying to gull, they give away the game in the second sentence: "poll workers asked him to provide an ID with a signature, which is not required under state law." So not obeying an illegal request makes one a "provocateur."
