Russia expands bombing blitz in Georgia

By DAVID NOWAK – 2 hours ago

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Russia expanded its bombing blitz Sunday against neighboring U.S.-allied Georgia, targeting the country's capital for the first time while Georgian troops pulled out of the breakaway province of South Ossetia, as Russia has demanded.

Georgia's Security Council chief Alexander Lomaia says that Georgian troops have relocated to new positions outside South Ossetia.

"They are outside the region entirely," he said in a telephone conference.

Russia has demanded that Georgia pull out its troops from South Ossetia as a condition to negotiate a cease-fire. It also urged Georgia to sign a pledge not to use force against South Ossetia as another condition for ending hostilities.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said that Moscow now needs to verify the Georgian withdrawal. "We must check all that. We don't trust the Georgian side," he said.

Russian jets raided a plant on the eastern outskirts of Tbilisi that builds Su-25 ground jets used in the conflict by Georgia, a U.S. ally whose troops have been trained by American soldiers. The attack damaged runways but caused no casualties, said Georgia's Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili.

6. He can't because Russia has thousands of nukes aimed at the USA
Edited on Sun Aug-10-08 10:19 AM by NNN0LHI
They could begin landing here in about 20 minutes after the order was given to launch.

Bullies do not mess with someone who can defend themselves.

And our Bully In Chief knows it too.

Georgia is fucked.

22. No, we don't, especially on the side of Georgia
Georgia has been in the wrong in this case. They've been shoving for years and Russia finally shoved back.

No, we don't like to see civilians suffer and we especially don't like seeing big countries attack little ones. However, we do need to acquaint ourselves with the facts here and the facts support Russia's intervention.

Stupid would likely try to intervene on the behalf of the US friendly Georgia. That would be a serious error but one he is likely to make.

Most of the Georgian expansionism is the result of hubris brought on by years of being supplied and trained by the US to fight people they don't particularly dislike. This is another unintended consequence of stupid US foreign policy that focuses on supplying military efforts instead of concentrating on diplomacy.

and bullies, predatory psychopaths and drunken frat boys don't like targets that can fight back.

10. China is busy with the Olympics. Russia, thanks to dick cheeney, is
now busy with Georgia. Meanwhile, a US/British armada is reported to be headed for the Persian Gulf.

I wonder what's going to happen next.

11. Many sober analysts in Europe think
Bush is the reason this started. Even Robert Hunter is of the view that the US gave Georgia the tacit permission to attack South Ossetia's citizens.

BBC has decent coverage.

13. Not boosh. He's too busy ogling female athletes' asses in China and
being falling-down drunk.

This has cheeney's blood-stained hands all over it. He did 9/11. He did Iraq. And now he did Russia. and next he's going to do Iran. After that, he's going to do us.

Any minute now.

17. "tacit permission to attack South Ossetia's citizens"
Which many seem to be missing. Georgia unleased a large surprise artillery attack on civilian areas.

No good guys in this one.

16. Putin vs Bush. This one isn't even close!
Bush is partially to blame. He's been shilling hard for NATO membership irritating the Russians. Putin counters with an invasion of Georgia. Bush counters with exactly what? Too many of our troops are tied up in Iraq.

Georgia is too unstable for NATO inclusion, a point not surprisingly lost on our sub-genius president.

There's nothing to be done except watch Bush's latest foreign policy blunder unfold and wish for the day when the dumbass is out of office.

20. I've been reading on this all morning
trying to educate myself on this situation as much as possible. It's amazing how ignorant we can be until something like this happens. My heart goes out to the people of Georgia.

I was wondering about these "peacekeepers" who were sent to Georgia. I understand it was seen differently by Georgia. Who were these "peacekeepers"--Russian ?
