NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has deplored the "disproportionate use of force" and Russia's lack of respect for Georgia's territorial integrity.

Scheffer also urged an immediate ceasefire after Russian troops backed by tanks and fighter jets seized control of the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.

"The Secretary General of NATO repeated today his call for an immediate ceasefire," a spokeswoman for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) said.

"He also expressed his concerns about the disproportionate use of force and lack of respect for the territorial integrity of Georgia," she added.

1. I was nearly deafened by the irony alert that went off
...when Bush** said the same thing. Where was he when Israel was blowing the crap out of Lebanon? And how about what he did to Iraq for no reason based in reality?

Ain't a thing we can do about it, these bastards run the show and will do/say exactly as they please no matter how obvious their bias and self-serving greed.

9. The bombing of Lebanon was merely the "birthpangs of a new Middle East."
Another case in point was the absolute silence of the administration and the EU on the Russian destruction of the Chechan city of Grozny which, according to Eric Margolis, was refered to by a Russian journalist as the "Hiroshima of the Caucasus."

Margolis writes:

"Before 9/11, the US and EU had criticized Russia for massive human rights violations in Chechnya. But once Washington need Russian support for its invasion of Afghanistan - and the Russians cleverly told Bush the Chechen were ‘linked to Osama bin Laden’ - the White House abruptly re-branded the Chechen national resistance - hitherto described as ‘freedom fighters’ - as ‘Islamic terrorists.’

Presidents Bush proclaimed a joint US-Russian ‘war against Islamic terrorism’ and sanctioned Russia’s savage repression in the Caucasus. The EU dutifully fell into line. The FSB whispered to CIA that Afghanistan was filled with Chechen ‘terrorists’ trained and financed by bin Laden, though, in fact, there were only handful there who had come for military training or medical care. The Bush Administration shut down all Chechen web sites on the internet and halted fund raising to assist the beleaguered Chechen people. America, once the champion of democracy and freedom, had come down squarely on the side of reaction and repression."

11. War isn't a football game or a contest of sportsmanship.
There is no rule that says you have to match strengths.

12. Which is why truth must be neutralized as a weapon
Because it's so devastating and only one side gets to use it. It also tends to serve as an equalizer between nations of remarkably disproportionate military means. So the first casualty in every war has to be truth.
