An Idiot for More Blunt and Sex, Less Violence and Greed
I am amazed, just amazed at the number of people who are personally offended that John Edwards cheated on them. Who knew he was a Mormon, and that he was supporting so many wives? We all know that what happens within a marriage affects only two people---the husband and wife---and maybe their children if they are not discreet. So, all of these whining self professed Democrats must be Edwards’ women tearing out their hair over John’s infidelity.

If only they could work up as much passion for this:

http://www.dso.uncc.edu/women/TBN_Web/stats.html

Between 1/3 and 1/2 of all adult women are beaten by their husbands or lovers at some time in their lives. 14% of American women acknowledge having been violently abused by a husband or boyfriend.

92% of women who were physically abused by their partners did not discuss these incidents with their physicians; 57% did not discuss the incidents with anyone.

In the U.S., every 9 seconds a woman is physically abused by her husband.

Consensual sex or spouse abuse? I know which one I consider a problem.

How about Barrack Obama? When he was a kid, he did the kinds of things that kids do---and that some adults like to do, too, if they are born with a silver coke spoon up their nose like our current president. While few would fault a teenager for experimenting with weed and cocaine, some might question the judgment of a professional man (an attorney) who chose to write about the experiences in his autobiography. It sure got him a lot of attention that he might have wanted to avoid.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200712170004

Matthews accused Clinton's campaign of engaging in "dirty politics," he began the December 14 edition of Hardball by asking, "Is the Clinton campaign pushing the drug story? When it comes to stopping Obama, do things go better with coke?" Matthews and his guests then proceeded to say "cocaine" a total of 10 times during the December 14 show.

I can say it more times than that. So what? It’s a medication that is also used for recreational purposes. Big deal. What people choose to smoke, snort, inject and imbibe for their own amusement pales in comparison to this :

http://www.pnhp.org/news/2004/september/number_of_uninsured_.php

18,000 Americans die every year because of lack of health care, and one million middle class families go bankrupt for medical bills. Death and bankruptcy — that is real terror for any family!

Wasn't there something about the other candidate that was supposed to make me feel more offended than the Bush-Cheney lies about WMDs that have killed 4000 U.S. troops, wounded 100,000 more and killed over half a million Iraqis? I remember KO and a bunch of DUers going on about it. What was it....?

That's right! I was supposed to feel personally slighted, because Hillary Clinton said that she landed under sniper fire, but the TV cameras do not show sniper fire. She was talking to me. She was stealing my thunder, in advance, from the time when I am going to run through sniper fire, making it seem like just anyone can do it. What is it that they called it? Valor theft? That’s right. From the day which will surely come when I will be asked to fly into a war zone to lift the morale of troops. Damn! Now I’m going to have to run through sniper fire and when I get home, people will say “So what! Hillary already did it!” That witch! She stole all the glory!

I might get around to worrying about that one, if I can find time when I am not thinking about this:

http://www.teachkidspeace.org/doc300.php

It is estimated that 43 percent (157 of 366) of all armed organizations in the world use child soldiers, 90 percent of whom see battle. In the last decade, more than 2 million children have been killed in combat, a rate of some 500 per day.

Here is a map of countries where children are forced to fight. Note that these are not George W. Bush’s so called “Axis of Evil”, these are just plain countries.

http://hrw.org/children/child_soldiers_map.html

I expect that those Democrats who were planning to vote for John Edwards to be president of Good and Faithful Husband for Elizabeth are a mite displeased, just as those who were planning to vote for Hillary Clinton to be president of Runs Through Sniper Fire probably had their hopes dashed.

On the other hand, Democrats who view elections as a chance to elect leaders who will tackle the many problems which confront our country and the globe know that any one of these three candidates is up to the challenge.

If we lived in France, we would not even be having this discussion. Vive la France.

3. it isnt about the sex. it is about him losing whitehouse if he won primary
it has been said over and over and over. you guys continually take it to the sex. the sex is no ones business, but if he won primary and this came out, he would have lost the race.

but just keep making it about the sex so you can have a fake high road to stand on and continue to argue

it was a bad move on his part

he can fuck whomever he wants. not my business. but he was willing to put the whitehouse up for grabs and that isnt ok.

So lemme get this straight... You're driving down the local Main Street when a totally hammered on whiskey driver runs a red light across your front bumper and you slam on your brakes, skidding 100 feet to a stop in the middle of the intersection. The drunk drives happily away. So do you.

mmmmkay.

We're electing a human being. And we're better off for it. A human being doesn't have to convince people he's infallible.

John Edwards getting laid has about as much interest to me as the story that followed it on some tabloid show the other night. Did Jennifer Anniston get her upper lip botoxed?

I'd still vote for Edwards. To me, he was the most human and caring of all the candidates. Maybe this reinforces it. I don't know. I look at someone's policies before I vote. I don't inspect the stains on their underwear.

I was so freaked out that Kerry didn't immediately and forcefully call out the Swiftboat liars. That was when Kerry's fortunes took the downward turn. Still, he won the election, but that's another story.

I just don't understand what it is the Dems have against EXPOSING THE OTHER PARTY'S CANDIDATES' IMMORALITY. Just frickin' mind-boggling.

Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 08:28 AM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
ANY Democrat candidate, for the White House being beaten by ANY Republican candidate.

You all know, every one of you, that the only way a Republican could take back the White House is the way it took it the time before and the time before - namely, BY MASSIVE FRAUD.

So, you are either a double-dyed knave - in which case, what are you doing on a Democratic board? Or your words are simply extremely foolish. In which case, what are you doing on any political board? This is not supposed to be a mothers' meeting for exchange of endless gossip. Your case is wholly bereft of any merit whatsoever. Go and tell your friends.

Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 11:01 AM by 1monster
that he hadn't done better, but because of this issue? He had just pledged to stay in the primaries and then, with no warning, tersely quit. A lot of people thought he looked angry when he did.

There was speculation, right here on DU, that he had some how been coerced to abandon his campaign.

And, of course it is about the sex. If he hadn't had sex with Hunter, the whole issue NEVER comes up.

As McCamy stated in her OP: If this were France, we wouldn't even be talking about it. Viva la France....

as much as you can say it is about sex. you could say it is the way media latches on to a dem projected "weakness' to influence election as much as you could say it was about sex

the anger from dems is viable candidate.

and no, i hadnt thought of it. but if that is the case, good that whatever put the pressure on him did it prior to him winning. i could have done edwards (pun noticed but not intended) more than obama and hillary. if that were the case, once caught and in his confession, he could say why i stepped down. i think that would be more respected but still, you have those that gave money and hard work(not me, but i understand that anger) to a candidate that wasnt viable and giving money to the women he was cheating with. in essence paying her.

interesting thought though. thanks

Which reaaalllly makes it sad to think that the U.S. isn't France, Italy, New Zealand, Argentina, Botswana, Brazil, Sweden, Burkina Faso or Benin... The list of countries you could come up with is probably comparable to the list of countries that are in favor of the Kyoto Protocol, against land mines, and in favor of an International War Crimes Tribunal that won't automatically exclude the U.S. from prosecution.

What about the presidential candidate that left a crippled and injured wife that stood by him while he was out of circulation for about four years for a rich young trophy wife. To me much moe morally wrong, but that was 30 years ago not 2.

is the lying and cover-up. Call me naive, but I think America could get behind a candidate who said, "Yeah, I've made mistakes, I'm human. I cheated onmy wife one, I'm sorry and she forgave me. I'll happily answer any questions you have about these things, and then we'll get on talking about the real issues of the day."

Any person with a genuine sense of shame and remorse - other than a fundamentalist preacher caught with a prostitute - would feel extremely reluctant to divulge to the whole nation a serious sin they had committed (which is none of business of a single member of the population outside Edwards' family) just because adulterous, crooked, mealy-mouthed Republicans, and Democrats barely worthy of the name, think he should and publicly beat his breast for their Pharisaic satisfaction. WhatI'm saying is if you done things we have all done, decide to lead a public life and know the other side is going to dig it out and find it, just be honest, lay it all out on the table, and say you're sorry. It's honest and doesn't make you look like a weasel when it leaks out.

37. But it's not your business, it's not my business, and it's not anybody else's. And to claim that
deferring to the criminality of the MSM is simply being realistic is a cop-out. No-one in public life owes a debt of honesty concerning their private life to the public.

The public are a rag-bag of good bad and indifferent people who, overall deserve nothing more and nothing less from politicians than good policies and good government. Only the worst and/or most limited people look for titillation in such stories about the behaviour of politicians and other celebrities in their private lives in such rags as The Enquirer. Although it can be fun reading about them, just the same, if you don't like them even on the basis of the scant knowledge we usually have of them. But that's to our shame.

But to expect politicians to be exemplars is just foolishness. In this world, "respectability" means status and power. It does not reflect piety. Since when have high office and fame been breeding grounds of unexceptionable behaviour?

Moreover, bear in mind that the lure of sexual transgressions constitutes only one of many clamorous siren voices politicians, particularly the younger ones, face on a daily basis, although their effects are much more deleterious and far-reaching than a liberal would acknowledge or indeed understand.

Inordinate ambition matched by a poverty of ideals, as well as avarice and other expessions of selfishness, seem to be the main besetting sins of high-profile/powerful politicians and the worldly-wise, generally.

To paraphrase again, better to come clean and be thought a fool, than to cover-up and be thought a liar. People can sympathize with fools.

She accepted that. IF it is okay for her and you say you support her, support her desire for privacy.

38. Here's your Whahbi 'Christian'
John 'your place or mine' Edwards on why he refuses to support equality in marriage for all Americans:
"Because I’m 53 years old, and I grew up in a small town in the rural South," replied Edwards. "I was raised in a the Southern Baptist church, and so I have a belief system that arises from that. It’s part of who I am. I can’t make it disappear."

Is that the sort of thing you mean? Because that pisses me off too! Had he kept his dogma as a private practice, he'd have me on his side now...as it is...
He said that kind of shit before, during and after his affair and string of lies to all who knew the truth. A belief system for others to follow, while the rich Johnny does as he may will.
Fuck that. It is not a private matter. When asked about my house, Johnny did not say 'that is not our business, it is a private matter' no, he stood in judgment and declared my house outside of his moral code.
Defend that if you wish. I will not.

When John Edwards apologizes for standing on a high horse of false righteousness and speaking against equality for GLBT Americans due to his 'Southern Baptist belief system'. He said it was a part of him, he can not make it disappear, so the gays should deal with it. This was, McCamy dear, before during and after his string of lies and adultery. In fact, if his wife had not assisted his lies, he could not have gotten by with smugly casting himself as the Christian ideal contrasted with the sinnful 'homosexuals' his 'faith' hates so much.
And hey, check out the bigoted history of Johnny's Southern Baptists. It is part of him. It is his belief system. Unless he wants to fuck someone of course. But hey....
If this was Frace, McCamy, my partner would share my health insurance, and yes, idiot religionists like John would not matter. Vive la France ideed.

If the fate of the country depended on me keeping my pants on, you can damn well bet they would stay on regardless of the personal freedom/privacy issues involved. The media should stay out of people's sex lives, there are more important things to report on, I'm with you on that, but that's not the reality we live in, not even close, and to pretend otherwise is just naive. I supported him and sent him money and I'm PISSED. You can pretend we give a shit about his personal sex life, but you know better.

I showed apartments every day, to all sorts of people, and I always tried to establish rapport with them, to make them feel welcome, to explain the advantages of the property, and not to cover up the flaws. (If they rented the apartment, I would have to field their complaints for at least a year--if I had misled them on any important point, I would pay for it. Honest really is the best policy.)

Anyhow, the man was a local attorney, early thirties, and I was being my usual friendly self, and he just pasted me to the sidewalk with his tone of voice. He didn't say anything insulting, but the way he said what he said made it clear he saw me as an air headed cunt. So I rented him an apartment--he was a good credit risk, and he was getting a divorce, he told me, and needed some new housing. He brought his two-year-old son to stay with him on a few weekends, and I saw the baby playing on the swings behind the office building.

The next news was that he had been shot to death by his wife when he entered her home. He had doubtless threatened her, and she took his threat seriously, and was prepared. I don't know whether she had a protection order, but I have heard enough to know that protection orders really aren't worth much. They don't prevent stalking, and they don't protect you from an armed man, or even an unarmed man who's twice as strong as you. Not unless the police are parked around the corner from your house.

Usually when I hear men talk about this, they always point out that some women abuse men too. That's true. But I've never heard a discussion of why the male abusers outnumber the female ones so badly.

This is one of the many social problems we need to come to grips with--and John Edwards cannot save us from ourselves, nor Barack Obama, not Hillary Clinton. We can always save ourselves, but waiting for a politician to make our souls whole is gonna be a very long wait.
