Aug. 12--ASHEVILLE The national Democratic Party, already spending nearly $1million on an ad against Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole, apparently plans to spend an additional $7million after Labor Day.
"I don't think anybody's been targeted that much," said Dole aide Brian Nick.
Nick said the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has reserved $7.3 million of airtime in North Carolina after Labor Day. The DSCC already has spent about $800,000 on an ad that calls Dole ineffective. DSCC spokesman Matt Miller would not confirm the amounts.
The money would help Dole's opponent, Democratic state Sen. Kay Hagan. Hagan reported raising $3million through June to Dole's $8.4million.
The ad currently running points to a report by a nonpartisan company called Knowlegis that ranked Dole 93rd in effectiveness among the 100 senators.
"She can't fix gas prices from 93rd place or create jobs," a narrator says in the ad. "And she sure hasn't fixed immigration from 93rd place. Elizabeth Dole. After 40 years in Washington, not as effective as you might think."In Charlotte on Monday, Dole called the ad "frankly despicable."
She said the rankings don't reflect work she has done on issues such as the tobacco buyout for N.C. farmers or the retention of N.C. military bases.
The $7 million appears to represent one of the Democratic Senate committee's biggest expenditures this year.
Jennifer Duffy, an analyst with the Washington-based Cook Political Report, said the figure may be inflated, but still suggests that Democrats plan to make an impact in the race.
"If I'm Sen. Dole, I'd be worried about the money the DSCC is going to spend, whether it's $3 million or $7million."Dole spoke to the Charlotte Chamber on Monday and later toured Johnson C. Smith University.
