Principal Who Discussed Pregnancy Pact Resigns

BOSTON — The principal of the public high school in Gloucester, Mass., resigned Tuesday, two months after telling a reporter that a group of girls at the school made a pact to become pregnant and raise their babies together.

In June, Time Magazine reported that the principal, Joseph Sullivan, said at least half of the 18 girls who became pregnant during the school year did so as part of an agreement.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk and Schools Superintendent Christopher Farmer said at a news conference days later in June that there was no evidence of “any planned blood-oath bond to become pregnant.” Ms. Kirk said that Mr. Sullivan was “foggy in his memory” of how he heard about the pact, and that his memory had “failed.” Mr. Sullivan was not at the June news conference and has not spoken further about the alleged pact.

In a statement on the Web site of The Gloucester Daily Times, Mr. Sullivan said Ms. Kirk “publicly slandered my reputation, my integrity and my intelligence.”

Mr. Sullivan said he planned to retire. He said he had not spoken to Ms. Kirk or Mr. Farmer since the story ran, though Ms. Kirk left a note with his secretary last week suggesting he call.

1. There IS something to being anonymous, and keeping your mouth shut,
doing your job, and not wanting to be in the news:).

2. I suspect he was pressured to resign, a punishment for the embarrassment to the community.
I think there probably was a stupid pact among many of the teen girls to all get pregnant at the same time.
