Google Streetview Camera Car
They use different kinds of cars. But the camera apparatus seems to always look pretty much the same - a camera elevated on a rod attached to the roof of the vehicle.

1. I've seen a couple of these, but in SUVs, not beetles
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 06:07 PM by Cronus Protagonist
THe ones I've seen in LA also have what looks like a radar dish - kind of reminiscent of the NORAD airplanes.

3. I was surprised that they've already done our street
A suburban town just west of Denver. I've never sen them around here at all. I have mixed feelings about this.

6. It is a little creepy
But it's not the government, and they're only filming at random in public, so I guess it's OK.

5. I think you can have your face blurred
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 06:11 PM by eleny
Our neighbors across the street are shown sitting in front of their house. In fact, my husband may be one of the people out there. But I can't identify them for sure. I've looked at some streets in my old neighborhood in Queens, NYC and the people are very clear.

10. There is a box you can check to have the pictures removed!
I did it, and now, a few weeks later, my house is only shown from an extreme left side shot, and you can't zoom in on it! It used to show our car with license plate # visible. JERKS.

14. plug in your address
wait for the "street view" image box to show up. Click "Street view help". Click "report inappropriate image" in the box that opens up. yet another box opens up, in which you click on "privacy concerns" - You'll get this set of options:

Privacy Concerns
Why are you reporting this street view?
This is in reference to an image of:
A face I am reporting an image of a face that has not been blurred
I have found a picture of my face (or of my child's) and would like it removed

My house I have found a picture of my house and would like it removed

My car / a license plate I am reporting a legible license plate that has not been blurred
I have found a picture of my car and would like it removed

If you have someone's address, as you said, you can actually GO to your house. Google Street View or not.

20. have you ever looked at MSN's bird's eye view map?
You can get all sides of your house from an aerial view if your area has been done. Granted it's not as close up as google street view but it's amazing.

Creepy. But I realized even though someone plugs your address in, they wouldn't know which house it is.

26. OK, that's creepy
They've got my street address, which is on a small little road half a mile long, & there's my neighbor's car parked outside. Maybe I should've waved? Initially it seems like a cool idea - it'd be nice to check out vacation spots or new neighborhoods. But that was before it had my own street! How could they have got all of these roads so quickly?

27. is that the kind of car that got the passed out guy in front of his house in australia?

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23530849-details/Google's+Street+View+captures+the+moment+a+drunken+Aussie+keeled+over+outside+his+home/article.do

A man who fell asleep in a drunken stupor on the grass outside his home was horrified to find his embarrassment posted on the internet.

He had been drowning his sorrows over the death of a friend and collapsed after climbing out of a taxi.

As he slept off his excesses, a car-mounted video camera passed by to record pictures of the street for Google's StreetView website...

29. Much of Manhattan's Street View has been removed
A few weeks ago I checked for the house where I grew up in Woodhaven, Queens, NY. Most of the neighborhood was available. Just my old block and a couple of blocks around it were not available yet. Now, only the main streets in Queens are showing Street View.

All of Manhattan was available but not any more.
