Memo From a Pissed-Off God
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 11:17 PM by NanceGreggs
Let me start by saying that playing the role of An Angry God has never appealed to me. You know, schtick like flooding the entire planet, or turning Lot’s wife into a pillar of salt – although impressive (and they do tend to make for a great story!), it’s never really been My thing.

Truth be told – and being who I am, telling the truth is kind of a given – a lot of you are really on my last nerve these days, to the point where a plague of locust and an outbreak of boils is starting to seem like a great idea.

Allow me (and come to think of it, who’s gonna stop me?) to be blunt. I am sick and tired of hearing about how some of you – and I know who you are – are screwing up the environment, ignoring your less fortunate brethren, and waging war, while having the My-damned nerve to say that you’re somehow doing it with My blessing.

So let’s start with getting a few things straight between us – a Creator and created-in-My-image kind of discussion, if you will – just so we all know where I stand.

I think I’ve made it pretty darned clear from the beginning that doing unto others as you would have done unto yourself was the way to go – and as I remember it, I didn’t allow much in the way of wiggle room. You either looked out for your neighbor or you didn’t, and I would be the Ultimate Judge of how well you scored.

Nowadays I’m inundated with legal briefs, filed by those of you who think there’s a loophole in that admonition that’s big enough to not only crawl through, but drive your SUV through while hauling a tractor-trailer full of excuses for why you think your fellow man doesn’t deserve your notice.

Now, a lot of you might remember my Son (long-haired hippie-type, popular at parties once that water-into-wine thing got around). Well, I gotta tell you, every time I hear someone say, “How would Jesus vote?”, or “What would Jesus do?”, it makes me wonder if I got so caught up in saying things like “Let there be light” back in the early days of this whole experiment, I forgot to make sure you were all given brains along with your standard-issue humanity kit.

So once again, let me try to make this so simple, even the simple-minded among you can understand.

Waging war for the sake of power and money is not something Me, or The Kid, would vote for. Nor is the idea that killing and maiming innocent people for access to oil something either of Us would get behind.

Here’s a few more tips on things I don’t approve of (and I can’t believe I actually have to spell this out for you, but here goes):

· Screwing up the planet so that a few greedy corporations can make bigger profits.
· Justifying killing people on the basis that they talk funny, worship in places that aren’t called churches, and wear strange things on their heads.
· Waging war and pretending it’s about spreading concepts like democracy when it’s really about coveting thy neighbors goods
· Torturing your fellow man (and just for the record, calling it “enhanced interrogation techniques” isn’t getting anyone off the hook)
· Forcing fellow human beings to work in inhumane conditions and labeling it “the free enterprise system at work”

And finally, the BIGGIE (to use the colloquial term), justifying your absolute worst behavior – i.e. throwing stones from your glass house, judging others as though you aren’t deserving of judgment, ignoring the plight of your fellow man because you have deemed them lazy, not moral enough by your standards, or just too beneath you to be considered your equal – by declaring yourself a God-fearing Christian.

Believe Me – and on this point, I most assuredly know whereof I speak – you are definitely barking up the wrong tree. And if you really are God-fearing, you might want to reconsider your current approach to following My Word.

In closing, I just want to remind all of you, yet again, that I know what’s in your heart of hearts – so don’t even try telling me that when you vote for people who are promoting war, famine, pestilence and death – so long as it’s the other guy who has to suffer, and not you – you are honestly doing so because you think that's the way I would have wanted it.

Folks, I didn’t just fall off the celestial turnip truck. So, please, spare me your woeful cries that when you spat on the homeless guy who was beggin’ for a quarter for food, when you looked the other way when people were imprisoned without charge, when you declared that the sick deserved their fate because they were too lazy to get jobs that included health insurance, you were doing what the Good Lord (that’s Me!) taught you to do – because you weren’t, not by a long shot.

You might want to keep in mind that this All-Knowing thing is not just a rumor, but yet another fact that certain politicians would just as soon you forgot – along with everything else I’ve ever told you.

I’ve got a very long memory. And that doesn’t bode well for a lot of you – especially certain people of the church of political persuasion.

So smarten up, folks. Don’t make me regret that I ever started this whole thing in the first place. I've put a lot of faith in your ability to understand right from wrong, and your potential for coming down, strong and with conviction, on the side of doing the right thing.

Believe me, I am the last person in the universe who wants to be proven wrong.

6. Right on! This stuff used to be considered part of the Judeo Christian ethic.
We're becoming more detached and dehumanizing those outside of our immediate reach/view.

· Justifying killing people on the basis that they talk funny, worship in places that aren’t called churches, and wear strange things on their heads.

54. It still is
there are just an awful lot of people hiding behind a banner of "goodness" trying to lipstick over a pretty damned ugly pig. These are the folks I describe as the ones who'll sneak into someone's backyard to steal the sheets off the line, then steal the wood off the shed, then go to someone else's house they don't know and have a little cross-burning party whilst shouting verses from a Bible they don't read. The short description is "hypocrites", and unfortunately they're the most visible (and audible) segment of our society.

Mind if I make an emendation to your excellent points above? It isn't so much about coveting thy neighbors' goods. It's that they haul off and steal them. There's a long distance between "I like that", "I wish I had that", "I'm plotting to go get that" and "Now that I've stolen yours, say sum'p'n 'bout it". That last is what the neocons and their wingnut enablers are all about.

R. A. Heinlein put it the best, IMHO: "All sin lies in hurting other people. All other 'sins' are invented nonsense. Hurting yourself isn't sinful. It's just stupid."

G'dde rest him. He tried to warn us, too.

Let me begin by saying I try to do the right thing, sometimes I've failed, sometimes it comes out OK, I guess it's just a throw of the dice.

I know you are inundated with all of the "make me rich" stuff, and a whole lot of stuff that equates into being selfish & greedy from a lot of people that have been led astray, regardless of how they see you, (or if they don't acknowledge your existence). But there are are a lot of people I know down here that try to do the right thing every day, usually quietly and with the best of intentions. We're not all barbarians at the gate you know.

As you know, (I know you do), that we have different "sects" down here in every religion; Christians fight Christians, Muslims fight Muslims, Jews are still working out some of the nuances, and the whole thing with the Holocaust kind of lost you a lot of support from your Chosen People. Point is, we're human and we think we know it all, but we're like kids when it comes to this stuff.

Try not to be too angry with us down here. Granted it is our own fault that we don't research things and seek out what truths there may be, after all, it is far easier to listen to someone who says they know the answers to life's perplexing problems than actually trying to fix those problems. But we're kind of dumb...see after all these years, we make the same mistakes; thanks for the brains, but you should have sent instructions with them...after all, "some assembly required" doesn't really cut it.

I'll try to do better, but we're not all bad, and as for that Pillar of Salt trick...I have someone in mind...we'll talk later...;)

20. As usual, just added to the greatest of all time Nance stuff.....
passed along to all my email non-DU'er friends and family.............

Laughed heartily, and wondered if the evangelicals among us (and there are many) laughed just as hard.

God does his/her own thing - and by the standards set by Jesus, we are all falling down big time, but repukes in particular.

Imagine calling a war of genocide, a war for natural resources, a Christian thing to do???

Nance, when is your book out? If you haven't written one, just a reprise of of NanceRants would be a best seller.

Thank you for your imagination, your compassion and, especially, your rants.

I just spent the most horrible day with a friend who is blinded by the right. We argued all day about the war, Clinton's penis, Edwards lies, etc. Girl, I can't go into all shit she and her friend were throwing at me. Clinton's penis definately was a major factor in everthing wrong with the country including the 'fact' that 9/11 was also his fault. And those who perished in Katrina are the ones to blame because they were told to leave and they didn't. I'm sick to my stomach and pissed off to no end.

Someday I'll learn that some people are too stupid to listen.

27. Adding a chat with St. Peter about that war stuff
I was wondering what to do for my 1,000th post, and you provided the perfect thread for it.

This is an excerpt from the novel Jurgen (A Comedy of Justice), by James Branch Cabell. The protagonist, Jurgen, is visiting in Heaven, chatting with St. Peter. Jurgen asks the saint to explain a term he has just used:

"One thing I did not understand, sir: and that was when you spoke
just now of the War Roof."

"It is a stone roof, made of the two tablets handed down at Sinai,
which God fits over Earth whenever men go to war. For He is
merciful: and many of us here remember that once upon a time we were
men and women. So when men go to war God screens the sight of what
they do, because He wishes to be merciful to us."

"That must prevent, however, the ascent of all prayers that are made
in war-time."

"Why, but, of course, that is the roof's secondary purpose," replied
St. Peter. "What else would you expect when the Master's teachings
are being flouted? Rumors get through, though, somehow, and horribly
preposterous rumors. For instance, I have actually heard that in
war-time prayers are put up to the Lord God to back His favorites
and take part in the murdering. Not," said the good Saint, in haste,
"that I would believe even a Christian bishop to be capable of such
blasphemy: I merely want to show you, Jurgen, what wild stories get
about."

(Mods, don't worry about an overlong quotation. The novel is in the public domain and I pulled this excerpt from on Project Gutenberg.)

for a few thousand years of genocide, repression, torture, enforced ignorance, enslavement, capricious violence, turmoil, racism, and a hundred other abominations and all this before you sent your "Son" here to be tortured to death for no apparent purpose other than to establish a hierarchy based on the same death and violence psychosis you suffer and inflict on us.

40. Yet more Jethro Tull goodness
Hymn 43 (from Aqualung)

Oh father high in heaven -- smile down upon your son
whose busy with his money games -- his women and his gun.
Oh Jesus save me!

And the unsung Western hero killed an Indian or three
and made his name in Hollywood
to set the white man free.
Oh Jesus save me!

If Jesus saves -- well, He'd better save Himself
from the gory glory seekers who use His name in death.
Oh Jesus save me!

I saw him in the city and on the mountains of the moon --
His cross was rather bloody --
He could hardly roll His stone.
Oh Jesus save me!

45. Dear God,
Sorry to have to tell you, but it's become the American way to lie, mislead and distort for the sake of the mega profit machines. There's no such thing as 'clean coal' and what's deemed 'an acceptable standard of health care' is a joke. I have to watch Hannity and Colmes to learn there's no recession, it's okay for one candidate to have an affair because he was imprisoned in Vietnam, foreclosures in America isn't so bad, eminent domain is okay unless you are loosing an acre of land that was the family business for sixteen years. Our mountains here in Southwest Virginia are being logged, gouged, then blown up for the sake of the mega profit machines,

Dear God, hear our prayers...

47. Go fuck yourself, God. If I believed in you (which I don't), I'd ask WTF
you allowed 8 years of George Bush in the first place. Among countless other horrors and indignities.

But I know you're nothing but a human invention.

So I don't need to ask why you're only preaching to the choir.

55. uh oh this just in

A stranded rafter is lowered to shore from a
helicopter after being hauled across the Colorado
River on Sunday.

PHOENIX - Rains around the Grand Canyon caused an earthen dam to fail Sunday and created flooding that forced helicopters to pluck hundreds of residents and campers from the gorge. No injuries were immediately reported.

The failure of the Redlands Dam caused some flooding in Supai, a village on a canyon floor where about 400 members of the Havasupai tribe live, said Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge. The current floods and potential for more required the evacuations, she said.

No structures were damaged after the dam failed about 45 miles upstream from Supai, but some hiking trails and footbridges were washed out, she said. Trees were uprooted, the National Weather Service said.

56. Wow.
It makes sense, really. God WOULD send the memo to one of the leading members of DU. Who else would "get it"? Certainly not the blowhards on the right.

One of your very, very best, what can I say? :applause:

58. But, God, America serves Mammon not you anymore!

Our symbol is no longer the cross, star, crescent, etc., it is the dollar sign. Our religion is Free-Market Capitalism. Our churches, our workplaces. Our bishops are the CEOs of the Fortune 500. Forget Moses, Matthew, Buda, or Mohamed, we have prophets (sounds like "profits"!) Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand. The Torah, Quran, and Bible, our sacred texts are "Atlas Shrugged" and "Free to Choose". Even self-identified "Liberals" can't even tolerate your name being used in a public venue. Why put you name on our coins when we really worship the coin and what it buys. Sorry, God, it is "Dollar, Almighty!" (or is it the Euro this morning?). Hey, gotta run and get to work now, or my boss will give me Hell! :sarcasm:
