Pakistan's Musharraf steps down
Sorry if this is being posted again, but what the hell is wrong with us, oh Nancy wake up!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7567451.stm

just a snip:

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, facing impeachment on charges drawn up by the governing coalition, has announced that he is resigning.

He went on national TV to say that while he was confident the charges would not stand, this was not the time for more confrontation.

He is accused of violation of the constitution and gross misconduct.

Only in America where criminals can get away with murder literally.

Unfortunate, in some ways.

Exactly how tease out the possible motivations from all the possible outcomes or goals is a serious problem. The Pak press hasn't been able to, largely because they're wedded to some position or other. The Pak citizenry has the same problem.

Removing a distraction, a real excuse, that prevented action? Removing a lame excuse for inaction and for failure? Removing the object of a PR blitz that obscured serious lack of action, so that the CYA game can't be played? Removing the only thing uniting your opponents, so that they're now fully dysfunctional and the coalition will collapse? Giving Sharif a victory, to weaken the PPP, knowing that Sharif's next demand will probably do in Zardari? Or maybe to protect Zardari? Stepping aside to allow Sharif his personal vengeance, in hopes that the implacable will be placated, or at least wrong-footed? Showing that the real enemy's excuse is a fraud? Stepping aside because Kayani suggested it, because Kayani believes in any of this? Stepping aside just to save legal fees and humiliation? (But all of these are just about *Musharraf's* side, right?)

Too many possible questions, not all of which have a single, clear answer. Only thing to do this early is wait.
