The following use of the Hitler example is not to imply the usual insult epithet. When the military(somewhat reluctant and with conditions) allowed Hitler, backed by corporations) to take power they lost control of the strongly PTSD affected dictator. Now McCain, instead of vowing rational revenge against Bush for 2000 has been cravenly making deals to prove his reliability to the Bush regime and the usual suspects, taking the military RW to the cleaners in the same process as Hitler did.
Once in power though, McCain would be some sort of unreliable threat, not far under the surface. His horrified Senate colleagues know that is the case. He has been getting vetoes from his own wary establishment. He married into the millionaire club. He has nothing but liabilities and failings albeit not the bold and risky behavior of Hitler by any means. In this world however, difference in comparative hot-headedness and out of control power are magnified by the crises and powers loose in the world. I would think his backers are silently withdrawing. The ONLY thing that keeps his upper crust backing alive is the fact he can die conveniently in office as one way out, even being removed as incompetent to set a precedent for keeping all future presidents in line. Still, the like to sleep at nights. They don't feel they should have to take risks, however poor their historical knowledge is.
But they will go through the motions of backing McCain because that is what the Wehrmacht or military inudstrial complex or billionaire plutocrats do. They can't change their spots or accept defeat.
