300 National Guardsmen out of food and water in Houston

06:23 PM CDT on Sunday, September 14, 2008

Associated Press

HOUSTON – Hundreds of first responders at two staging areas in Texas for Hurricane Ike have run out of food and water.

Congressman John Culberson said Sunday that 300 National Guardsmen, state troopers and other emergency workers are going hungry at a high-school football stadium — and at another staging area on Houston’s west side.

Culberson blamed FEMA for the gaffe and says he tried to contact Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who is touring flood-stricken areas of Texas.

Culberson says several buses full of gas are sitting idle at the stadium while crews await instructions. He called on area residents to take food and water to the crews at the stadium — despite official warnings for people to stay off Houston roads.

4. Usually the NG brings their own supplies....
and they have helicopters there. Why aren't they contacting the
Coast Guard to bring supplies? Why bother trying to call cJerkoff?

I don't get it.

6. Heckava job there......
FEMA USED to be a GREAT agency until it was GUTTED beginning in the Reagan years and then beyond......it's demise is a SYMPTOM of the systemic 'gutting of America'. All of those who believe "let's abolish FEMA" should be more CORRECTLY encouraging that FEMA should go back to behaving and being the agency that it once was! (Granted, I don't know if it's possible at this time, but at least have SOME understanding of where/who/what this agency once was.....and now we're all ready to drown it in a bathtub! Don't be 'conned'

13. FEMA worked well during the Clinton years, too, as far as I know!
But Clinton gave a DAMN about what happened to people during a natural disaster!

15. Perhaps.....so when/why did FEMA fall apart? And more importantly,
WHY did it fall apart? Under who's watch? Can FEMA become the duly respected agency that it once was?

My Ouija Board (now controlled by a 'corporate hand') says "NO", but what say you? Taxpayer, citizen, financiers of this whole thing?

Peace,

29. That's because Bill Clinton...
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 03:48 AM by SurferBoy
appointed people to various positions based almost entirely on their ability to actually do their freaking job.

He really didn't care all that much if they were Democrat, GOP, Libertarian, or Martian. Did they possess 'expert' knowledge of their tasking and actually do it well? Yes? Put 'em in there!

7. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
So, while the National Guardsmen go hungry--due to FEMA's blunders--they're calling on the victims
of this national disaster to supply them with food???

If this situations isn't the definition of 'completely fucked up'--I have no idea what is!

I'm not faulting the Congressman for suggesting that the public help out. People should help out
these brave volunteers if they can.

However, it's a bit like the Keystone Cops--when the victims of a natural disaster are told that they
must pull together and help those who came to rescue them--because the Federal Government fucked up--once again!

:eyes:

10. Where's Gov. Perry?! I agree with these guys --->
Posted by oregon2texas | 4 hours ago

As a former soldier and current peace officer this is absolutely pitiful. 1st and foremost there is a complete failure of planning from the governor to the company commanders on the ground. Soldiers will suck it up and do the job but they need at least one or two MREs a day & water to keep working in those conditions. Beans and bullets are basic army principles, not nuclear physics. Very disgusting...

you think Tx has some moral superiority to other places? Fuck that. It's what just about anyone would do if they had the means -- Tx, LA, Iowa, anywhere.

Oh wait, that would be accusing you of thinking in the first place.

Get off your superior high horse junior. You've got some SERIOUS delusions bouncing around in that vacant head of yours.

From the real news we've been getting, you've got not very much to be proud of at this point.

Looks like being the poster child state for the Boy King didn't get you guys much favor from the Throne any more than Louisiana.

14. Isn't the governor of TX responsible for the Guard?
Who is the current governor? He wouldn't by any chance be a REPUBLICAN, would he??

I guess now they want to monkeywrench the National Guard so they can justify privatizing it?
