State attorney issues 12 subpoenas in price-gouging probe (On-line headline)
South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster’s office issued four subpoenas Monday and eight more Tuesday questioning retailers about high gas prices.
Names of the retailers weren’t released because the subpoenas are simply officially requesting information, spokesman Mark Plowden said. If any charges are brought, the office then will release the retailer’s name, he said.
Subpoenas have been sent to retailers in Greenville, Spartanburg, Pickens, Anderson, Oconee, Laurens, Cherokee, Abbeville, Sumter, Aiken, Florence and Colleton counties. (snip ..)
Well more than 3,000 consumers have complained to local police, the state Consumer Affairs Office and the Attorney General’s Office since prices shot up shortly before Hurricane Ike struck. Additional subpoenas could be issued, the Attorney General’s Office said. (More ..)

Upstate motorists are paying from $3.50 to $4.60 a gallon for unleaded regular gas -- more than a $1-per-gallon difference -- depending on where they fill up, according to gasbuddy.com, a Web site that monitors gas prices throughout the state.
Despite the Upstate's reputation for often having the least expensive gas in the state, Charleston and Myrtle Beach currently have lower average gas prices. Charleston's average price at the pump for unleaded regular is $3.939. Myrtle Beach, usually the most expensive area in South Carolina for gas, reported average prices of $3.94.
The Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson area reported $4.097 a gallon, followed by Columbia at $4.194. (More ..)
