When Democratic leaders revealed their proposal to pull American troops out of Iraq by Fall 2008 last week, the liberal wing of the party quietly announced their own plan to start leaving immediately.
Leaders of the 69-member Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Out of Iraq Caucus have written a short amendment to the current supplemental appropriations bill specifying that all defense money spent in Iraq will henceforth be limited to "the safe and complete withdrawal from Iraq" by all American troops and contractors. They would all have to be gone by December 31, 2007, although diplomatic efforts and reconstruction activities would still be permitted so long our troops and contractors are not directly involved.
We know what you are thinking: The end of the year? Is that the best they can do? Why can't they get all the troops home sooner? Well, it seems to be about finding a compromise that can actually get passed.
