Honest mistake or scam?
I just got a call from the Obama campaign soliciting a contribution. I told the guy that I had just made an on-line donation and about the DU goal of $100,000. He thought that was great, etc., etc.

As he rang off he said: "See you at the polls on November 5th."

I said, "November 5th? Are you sure?"

He said, "Yes, November 5th."

I didn't press it, because I am often wrong on things like that. Then I looked it up and, of course, the 2008 general election is on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2008.

I'm guessing that it was an honest mistake.

1. Are you in a predominantly Democratic area?
During the 2004 election cycle, there were several published reports of robocallers calling people in phone exchanges known to be in Democratic strongholds, with a message that said "don't forget to vote on November x." (the day after the real election day. It was a misinformation campaign, done to hold down Democratic turnout.

2. Check the number if you have caller id. I'd call them back, find out about them
make sure they are actually working for Obama. Either a mistake they need to be corrected on, or something really nasty there. What was their number?

8. Check your phone book, or with phone company. *69 should do it though
Even if you don't have caller id, you can usually dial a *69 to get the number of the last call. Sometimes they allow a few/month, then charge, but try it and see. We had a few odd calls and used it a couple yrs ago. Stopped Jr's "friends" from calling when I called them back. Late at night. Right after they called me. Check with your local phone co also.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/*69
Last Call Return, commonly called Call Return, is a telephone feature code offered by telephone service providers to give a called party the time and telephone number of the last received call, and may also offer the facility to place a call back to the calling party.

The access number for this facility varies per country and provider:

* Canada and US: star code *69 (*66 in some markets); 1169 (1166 in some markets) on rotary phone/pulse dial telephones. (In the USA, "to star-69" is sometimes used as a verb)

3. I have seen that "mistake" before
seems it is a common tactic the RNC uses to confuse and confound people who don't listen as closely as you did. Chances are pretty good it was not a BHO staffer who called you but a McLamer or someone from a 527 trying to get you to vote on the wrong day.

6. He did know my correct mailing address.
I can't see a dis-information campaign like this may be so far out. A day or two or a week before the election .. maybe.

7. my guess would be mistake.
If he was soliciting donations it would be one hell of a risky scam. And not much point this far out.

10. Either way, if it was a mistake or a scam, they need to know ..
They need for their callers to have the correct general election date in front of them in large red letters!
