Another teen left at hospital under Nebraska's safe haven law
14-year-old Iowa girl abandoned under Nebraska law

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A 14-year-old Iowa girl was abandoned Tuesday in Nebraska under its safe haven law, but the person who left her could face prosecution in the girl's home state, Nebraska health officials said.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said the girl is from Council Bluffs, Iowa, just across the Missouri River from Omaha. She was left at Creighton University Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon, and her case was reported to Iowa authorities.

The girl is the 17th child overall and the first from another state to be abandoned since the law took effect in July.

It was meant to protect the lives of infants by letting a parent leave them at any state-licensed hospital without fear of prosecution, but the law doesn't set any age limit.

4. Why yes you can.
Whoever dropped this girl off was not living in Nebraska. Now they are bringing the teens in from other states.

2. This just breaks my heart...

I envision this 14-year old, being left at the hospital and how this child must
feel. It is gut wrenching.

Sadly, with the economy in a downward spiral, I imagine that we will see many of these
stories coming out of Nebraska, because of this law that they have.

People will not be able to take care of their own children. It's almost like people
are doing what adopted mothers do with newborns--try to give them a better home and release them
from desperate circumstances.

I don't know the back story on this, but I imagine that there are very sad, destitute people
who are doing this out of desperation and sadness.

3. U know come to think of it
I am glad they are dropping their kids off somewhere safe. We should be happy that their parents not killing them. Like that guy in LA he shot his wife, mother in law, and his three children. So do u think they should change the law now. No I don't they should just leave it alone.

6. With the economy in the toilet
Who knows? I feel sorry for this child.
I actually have great compassion for the mother who couldn't take care of the child. There are 14-year olds who are kicked out of their homes and forced to live in the streets and survive the best way they know how when the parents can no longer cope.
What a sad, sad sad situation.
Who knows what the future holds?
For all we know, orphan trains may become en vogue again.:(
