since yesterday just about this same time and I was listening to rush L. I know, why do I listen to him? I listen because I gotta know what the biggest idiot talking points are. Anyway, he blamed every prominent Dem...Pelosi, Dodd, Reid,Frank, etc. SO, I looked up el presidente's push to make home ownership available to the masses. Not only did he talk about it in his 2002 SOTU but here:

Fannie Mae Pledges Continued Support for President Bush's Nationwide Effort to Increase...
Publication: Business Wire
Date: Tuesday, October 15 2002

Business Editors

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2002

"The Blueprint for the American Dream that we unveiled today is the response to the `homeownership challenge' President Bush issued in June to increase minority homeownership," said HUD Secretary Mel Martinez. "Our partners, representing every segment of the affordable housing industry, are committed to working together to achieve the President's goal of adding 5.5 million new minority homeowners by the end of the decade."

In his February State of the Union address President Bush called for "broader homeownership, especially among minorities." In June, President Bush challenged both the public and private sector to be a partner in his crusade to create 5.5 million new minority homeowners by the end of the decade.

Fannie Mae responded by committing $700 billion in home financing to 4.6 million minority households through 2009. This increases by 66 percent the specific pledge Fannie Mae made in 2000 to minority families through it's American Dream Commitment plan to provide $420 billion for three million minority families.

"Through our ten-point plan, Fannie Mae has pledged itself to an extraordinary set of goals, both to increase homeownership over the course of this decade and to break barriers between underserved families," Raines said. "We will reach out to all who have a stake in closing the housing gaps because together can we bring the American Dream of homeownership more in line with the American ideal of equality."

====================================================================================================

Obviously, Barney Frank did not act alone as those like rush L. wants us to believe.

148. Read you own link... there were scandals, but there were also accomplishments
Presidential experts typically rank Grant in the lowest quartile of U.S. presidents, primarily for his tolerance of corruption. In recent years, however, his reputation as president has improved somewhat among scholars impressed by his support for civil rights for African Americans.<3>

Not to mention the fact that Lincoln was a Republican... and the whole premise that Republicans are a universal failure since the civil war completely ignores the changes that have taken place in the parties since then.

You might as well renounce Democrats since they were the ones who started the KKK.

Sheesh... Bush sucks, but maybe you should put down your broad brush.

He was not morally corrupt but trusted the wrong people.

He doesn't belong in the same group with Nixon & Bush, who were/are morally bankrupt.

181. Voter fraud? Who voted?
Don't you have to wait for a vote to make accusations of voter fraud?

I know what you're referring to, though. The Republicans are accusing ACORN of turning in millions of bogus new voter registration forms. Okay, maybe it's only a few thousand. But they are genuinely afraid Democrats might steal the election, when only they are allowed to do that.

Actually, I find it amusing that both sides are afraid the election will be stolen.

Here's another prediction: This election will be decided by such a large margin, in Obama's favor, that no serious charges of shenanigans will be made. (Fringe nutjobs are excepted.)

102. No, that's not true.
The Gramm-Leach- Bliley Act of 1999 was introduced in the Senate by Phil Gramm (R-TX) as S. 900 and in the House of Representatives by James Leach (R-IA) as H.R. 10. S. 900 was passed along party lines 54-44 in the Senate by Roll Call Vote 105 on by May 6, 1999. H.R. 10 passed by a 343-86 bipartisan vote in the House 343-86 on July 1, 1999 by Roll Call Vote 276.

The bill was returned from conference for final votes in both Houses as S. 900. It passed 90-8 in the Senate on November 4, 1999 by Roll Call Vote 354, and passed 362-57 on the same day in the House by Roll Call Vote 570.

Please note, Senate Roll Call Vote 354 is the one cited upthread. It is on passage of the final bill that was returned from the conference committee, and not to just clean up wording.

The Act had bipartisan support in the House from the beginning, but initially passed in the Senate virtually by a party line vote. What happened between May 6, 1999 and November 4, 1999 to convince Senate Democrats to support the bill?

The truth is, Senate Democrats supported the bill after Republicans agreed to strengthen provisions of the Community Reinvestment Act and address certain privacy concerns.

The bill was veto proof when it went to Clinton. But don’t be too quick to give Clinton a pass on this, since it’s likely that he would have signed the bill anyway. He and Congressional Democrats seemed interested in only these two issues, and were apparently unconcerned about repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933.

Republicans Propose a Deal on Financial Services New York Times, October 10, 2008

The Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 (Enron Loophole) notwithstanding, Phil Gramm in particular deserves blame because it is primarily he who introduced and sponsored the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999. And Congressional Republicans in general were more at fault because it is they who were pushing the legislation. But nearly all members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, were complicit when the Glass-Steagall Act met its demise. The same is true of Bill Clinton and his administration.

We Democrats should have drawn a line in the sand to protect this important New Deal legislation from Republicans. But we did not. We lost our way.

So sue me, it's the first thing I heard when I turned on the radio.

Anyway, there was a caller on who supports McCain (big surprise). Long story short, he and Beck both agree that those who vote for Obama bear the responsibility for "the things he will do to the country." And I can't help but wonder if these same people feel the same way about those who put Bush into office.

Great Depression.

Why do people think Republicons can run national economies?

They have proven, over and over again, that they can't be trusted with anything resembling money. Let them near money and they steal it, every damn time, leaving everyone else to hold clean up their mess.

I have a couple of friends who are totally...and I mean TOTALLY clueless about what's going on outside of what Fox "News" tells them.

They don't trust Democrats, BUT....

they'll willingly accept the help of social programs that likely would not exist if it hadn't been for the Democrats

Because their heroes...the Republicans...don't give two rat's asses about them....middle class, elderly, living on pensions, and just scraping by.

I don't get it...seriously

why accept help from people they neither like, nor trust...and then go right out and vote for the dirty bastards who put them in a position of having to accept help in the first place.

It's insane.

I hate the right wing. It is poison, it is toxic to real freedom, it truly is the old bully boy club that should NEVER be trusted with power or money..

I hope one day most people that can, WILL wake up and understand why it is vital to HUMANITY,to hate republicans and despise anything right wing/authoritarian or greed based bullshit.

The right wing IS a morality problem.
The right wing IS an ethical failure.
The right wing IS a haven for sociopaths, authoritarians and narcissistic ASSHOLES,and RIGHT WING /THEOCRATIC TERRORISTS..

The right wing is full of People that NEVER became adults, who NEVER had to try, who NEVER had to struggle paycheck to paycheck,NEVER had to do anything but bully to get ahead or bully because they could and they liked to be an asshole..The right wing followers are LOSERS who will do ANYTHING to have their decrepit egos and putrid immature hatreds catered to and their psychotic narcissistic religious fantasies acted out. They believe in such evils as 'truth'.The shit that the right wing peddles to humanity it can and DOES destroy everything good in humanity especially the HUMANE parts...

The obedient and 'leaders' alike of the right wing are the ones who hate true freedom, and they project that on everyone else like the blind monsters they ARE. The right don't give a shit about the social conduct contract that simple social compassion and courtesy that makes humanity able to balance the boundary between them together in freedom and responsibility. The right wing lacks the wisdom to not to corporatize and foul our world, dismantle our social systems and loot governmental services and defile the inalienable rights of each person.
The right wing only loves power so it can ABUSE it!!

May the right wing be cut out of America, and tossed aside to die.May the people see it for the parasitic, cancerous carbuncle it has become on the sick ass of this country.
May the right and all it's think tanks, churches, asshole "philosophers"and so called "gods", like reagan be seen as the LOSERS they are, the pigs they are, the fucking abusive pieces of SHIT they are..May the right be mistrusted seen as bad people, be shamed, publicly humiliated, abandoned, laughed at and be debunked at every turn until those idiots who stubbornly believe such lies and propaganda who find solace in such self serving ignorance kill themselves off.
And may all the truths on the left, we know already become as they always were... SELF EVIDENT!!!

Hey,REPUBLICAN PIGS,FUCK OFF AS HARD AS YOU CAN!!!

65. Yeah I know
And if they continue to trample on us,one day the left might quit believing in pie-in-the- sky ideas that do not work on people that don't care, like pacifism.. and fight back, the right will feel the hate personally one day.Hopefully before this world goes to shit and cannot recover. If they don't care about anyone else, why should ANYONE ELSE care for THEM?

I don't care about republican wastes of skin,I hope they all just kill themselves/each other. The sooner they are GONE the better.
I hate them all.I smile when bankers jump out of their posh office windows and overpaid arrogant Ceo's blow their own brains out.Yes I do I rejoice! One less asshole predatory parasite fucking up who knows how many lives.. I love seeing the right wing and all it stands for, suffer..Even if it is just one bully asshole at a time..The "right" will have to pay for the evil it represents, one way or another..eventually. I await the day the knife is in the beasts dead heart and it is twisting and ripping it apart exposing it's foul innards and corruption and ruining the right forever.

133. Continue to trample on us? Oh Yeah.. they will try!
We are going to win this election. Things are going to slowly get better. THESE ASSHOLE RAT BASTARDS are going to benefit from that! Yes they are! They are going to still take whatever they can, and then turn around and take credit for all of OUR work. After wards they will try to get their own elected so that AGAIN they can steal any gains that were made off of our broken backs. They will blame the liberals for the destruction they have wrought.

I SAY - NEVER FORGET!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!

We cannot just be passive and allow these criminals to continue to be a threat to ourselves and our children. We cannot allow our spirits to be broken, ever!

We need to bring them to justice - expose all of their crimes and lies. We cannot stop for a second! We need to shame and expose their bigotry, their hatreds, their Anti-American policies to the world! This is our time. We have to do it!

Their evil, right wing, fascist, theocracy supporting philosophy MUST be exposed, debunked and tied without a doubt to the destruction it has already caused, in such a way that it becomes REPUB + POWER = CORRUPTION AND DESTRUCTION, and that this is a deep lesson learned in the hearts of every man woman and child in this country.

NEVER FORGET!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!

We are all going to have to roll up our sleeves for the long term to get ourselves collectively out of this mess. We MUST stop hand wringing over the anti-intellectualism, the anti-science, the anti-environment, the anti-life, the anti-peace.

WE MUST STOP IT, AND STOP IT AGGRESSIVELY ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!

Go after FOX NEWS - a primary reason there are so many ill-informed ignorant people.
Go after the churches that preach from the pulpit and TAX THEM!

Impeach, prosecute, bring to justice the government and corporate criminals, and never tire in going after their asses. If one attempt fails, start again. Never stop!

WE ALL ARE IN THIS TOGETHER FOR THE LONG TERM AND OUR WORK HAS JUST BEGUN!

I'm pretty sure God is saying roughly the same about Repugs using His name on everything they do as well.

On that note...I have prayed over and over again that Barack would use THIS quote at SOME POINT, preferably now:

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith..." 1 Timothy 6:10

Maybe sting some of those fundies right through the heart. A purely Democratic religious message.

I have been paying attention quite well, thank you, enough to know that divisiveness is what the Republicans want. Enough to know that divisiveness is not on Obama's platform. And enough to know that "F.You" is wingnut-style tactics that we shouldn't stoop to.

You reach across the aisle if you want. When you get your hands bitten off, come back and talk. I've seen enough to know that making nice with the Repubs is a fool's errand, and I don't support it -- regardless of what Obama says.

Oh, and the 'visitors' I was referring to were the same ones you alluded to being shocked and leaving the site over threads like this. Try taking offense where it's intended -- from the Right.

113. It's the prominent placement that is the problem.
Just some thread with a F.Y. or whatever is different. Let's say I recommend this site to someone -- someone who doesn't know a lot of the info that is available here -- and the first thing they see, at the top of the page in the middle, is "fuck you". It is absolutely counter-productive.

123. WHY ARE YOU BEING SO NICE ABOUT THIS?
We don't need to be spineless about this. It's time to go to war against these people who have ruined our country. If you really love this country then you need to tell all the repukes you know that you loath them and you will not speak to them anymore and you will penalize them personally and in business every chance you get. It's time to go to war against these people because that's something they will understand. They don't understand reason. They are total hypocrites and you can't wake them up from it. The only solution is to physically let them know they are no longer going to be tolerated in any shape or form. If you really believe that they are responsible for this catastrophe then you need to fight them now. The time for talking with reason with them is over.

161. these neocons chased any decent Republican out of their party
I believe Chaffee was on the Daily Show awhile back because he has written a book--the one thing that stood out in the interview was that Cheney called a meeting BEFORE HE WAS SWORN IN in 2000-basically stating that we will not work with the Democrats, we're in power, there will be no compromises, the WH is calling the shots--you will stay in line with the new administration. Now, apparently, this was before he was even sworn in. I believe that some of the decent Republicans, such as Jeffries, saw the writing on the wall. Olympia Snow, Chaffee, in some extent Hagel (still questioning election fraud in his state), were true Republicans, not neo-cons. McBush is not in this group!!! We have had a majority in Congress of Republicans for the past ten years-we have had a slight majority in Congress in the past two years. The neo-cons have had a large opportunity to fully implement their "trickle on" Reagan plan for a good four years-and probably longer since they did everything during their term to make Clinton ineffectual in his last term. With their privatizing our service to the military, spreading our military thin, deregulating corporations, allowing them to "police" themselves, decreasing staff in the deregulatory departments, such as EPA, FDA, USDA--what have we gained? I have never seen so many recalls--I do not even trust the government now to tell me something is safe. My daughter is in the military and her fiance will be leaving for Iraq next week-it is so sad that I had to remind her to tell him to check his shower because of faulty grounding by a corporation that we are paying, or to make sure the water they are providing for him is safe to drink. This administration has done nothing to stop corruption and greed and I'm still waiting to hear what those "secret" energy meetings with Cheney were really about. Let's all say it together--"IT'S NOT MY FAULT"--that's *'s mantra--it's those poor people's fault (you know those who no longer have decent jobs),it's those minorities fault, it's those sick people's fault, it's those stupid people's fault, but "IT'S NOT MY FAULT!!!!!!!!"

I have INCESSANTLY been trying to get everyone to understand that the REPUBLICAN PARTY is 100% RESPONSIBLE for EVERY BIT of this "CRISIS."

This is NO FREAKIN' ACCIDENT.

The WORST ECONOMIC MELTDOWN in the HISTORY OF THE PLANET is attributed to ONE...and ONLY ONE... source.

The AMERICAN REPUBLICAN PARTY.

The AMERICAN REPUBLICAN PARTY...which is fueled by CAPITALISM...MUST be destroyed.

Yes, I dare say it...CAPITALISM, as it stands now, MUST BE DESTROYED.

We need to NATIONALIZE ALL MAJOR INDUSTRIES.

We need to REPATRIATE ALL WEALTH from individuals who have MORE THAN 10 million dollars. Why the HELL would anyone need more than that???

We need to SCUTTLE THE STOCK MARKETS around the world, and let PEOPLE MARKETS take their place. We should let the PEOPLE take over the economies so that ALL people can benefit, NOT the rich republicans!!!

BUT MOST OF ALL...we need to START by BANNING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

NOW!!!

You want to do something?

Do THIS!!

PROTEST in front of EVERY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE'S OFFICE in your area!

TIE IN THAT CANDIDATE with the THEFT of the economy ...and DEMAND that the candidate be INVESTIGATED FOR HIS OWN FINANCES.

I have more...but I am SO FREAKIN' PISSSED NOW>...

189. Yes, fuck us, but...
But remember that there are a lot of us ex-Republicans who are now voting Democratic.

I voted a straight Democratic ticket in the 2006 elections for the first time in my life. I voted Republican and Libertarian prior to that for many years.

You need to understand that your average Republican is not that bright. What they are is:

1) Self-sufficient. The average Republican considers himself extremely self-reliant and detests the idea of welfare. To a Republican, the Democratic Party is synonymous with welfare. What turned the tide for me personally was the realization that the Republican Party is also synonymous with welfare - the difference is the Republicans want to spend our tax dollars on Iraqi and Corporate welfare, and now that the corporations are global there is no way for trickle-down to work. I wish the current Democratic Party would hammer this point harder. If our government is going to blow trillions of dollars on welfare, at least the Democratic Party is more likely to spend it on average Americans.

2) Pro-firearm rights. This goes hand-and-hand with the self-sufficiency above. A man with a gun feels, legitimately or not, empowered by a means of final resistance and ability to feed and defend oneself if necessary. The Democratic Party has long been synonymous with gun control, and its current Party Platform reaffirms this stance.

3) Religious - "Family Values" oriented.

The Republican party has played excellent, convincing lip-service to these basic tenets listed above.

They have decried "walfare", all the while engaging in nationalistic warfare providing hundreds of billions of government and corporate pork-welfare, not to mention actual welfare going to Iraqi citizens after we destroyed their country. All your average Republican notices is flag-waving and "support our troops".

The Republican party has generally defended the right to keep and bear arms. All the while they are increasing the powers of the state while eroding civil liberties, making the necessity of actual armed revolt all the more likely. All your average republican notices is the guns he is able to keep and buy.

The Republican part is also quick to pander to the God and "family values" crowd. All the while they are busy having wide stances and all the other forms of debauchery that people in power have indulged in since the dawn of time. All the average Republican notices is that their officials seem to believe in God and are against abortion.

The answer to all of this is not to simply scream "fuck you" at these people but rather co-opt and deflate their issues. When your average Republican figures out that the Republican Party SAYS they are true to the above tenets but in fact they ACT completely contrary to them they get pissed off pretty quickly.

That's why I'm voting for Obama. Even my mother, who has been Republican since after Kennedy, is voting for Obama.

...think anything could top the insane decision to invade Iraq...and all of the incompetence wrapped in that decision.

But I was proven wrong...Destroying the world economy makes Iraq look like chicken feed.

They were asleep at the wheel. The challenge facing President Obama is nearly impossible to overcome.

Thank you...all of you on the right that did this to us. Thanks for your compassion and belief that you are your brother's keeper...

Fuck you.

And I might add...thanks to the Dems we put into office in '06...you did NOTHING! Impeachment off the table...fuck you too.

194. To Those Who Have Been Offended...
One area of concern I have seen is that some feel that this type of thread makes the site lose credibility. I would think that anyone who takes this thread to be totally indicative of the site in general is either predisposed to dismiss us anyway, or not empathic enough to see the pain behind this. Is this thread divisive? Absolutely. But let me ask you, how do you deal with bullies? Do you try to give them a discourse about how fundamentally wrong their actions and philosophy are, being extremely logical and rational, giving good reasons behind your point of view? Or, do you get tired of their bullshit, and give them a hearty "Fuck You." The response to this thread shows that most of the posters here support the latter. And so do I.

219. But it isn't targeting the "bullies"
it is targeting people who come to DU.

It's on the front page now, so I have no problem with it. But to go after the "bullies", the post should have been on the Freepers site.

It also would have place on a forum on anger management and mental health.

199. "Getting to the truth of financial crisis" from the "Daily Herald" in Illinois
http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=241376&src=

Getting to the truth of financial crisis

Over the last few weeks, I have read some Fence Post rants that I thought were really offensive.

They were trying to scapegoat this entire economic mess on Americans who live in low-income neighborhoods.

Only one of those writers could remember the proper acronym and year of the bill: The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 or CRA.

According to Business Week and Barron's, hardly bastions of liberalism, the CRA required banks to lend to people in the low-income neighborhoods they took deposits from.

Until the CRA's enforcement was weakened by this Bush administration, those loans were given with a higher degree of supervision than other loans.

The repayment of those loans was actually more reliable than most other loans because of the strict regulations that were required.

Most of the subprime loans that were made in this crisis, over 80 percent, were made by firms that were not subject to the CRA.

Most of the problem can be attributed to banks and mortgage companies making as many loans as possible and being allowed to sell those loans off in bundles to other firms, which sold them to other firms and so on.

These companies were engaging in irresponsible speculation and failed to keep adequate capital in case, well, those speculations were wrong.

Essentially, they were flipping mortgage loans, and many of those loans were made to people flipping houses trying to make a quick buck.

I don't blame those Fence Post writers totally. I have heard the same rant almost verbatim from Rush Limbaugh.

I suggest that before they start blaming other Americans for anything, they should look into the subject more.

That might require a little effort and maybe even some reading on their part. However, don't you think getting to the truth is worth the effort?

220. Please don't go to Obama rallies and yell this kind of stuff
because you the rest of this chorus increasingly look like the flip side of the same phenomenon that McCain is being criticized for, the people in his rallies yelling "Kill him" when they hear the name "Obama".
