The War Between The City Slickers and The Country Bumpkins
It is amazing how the rural and suburban areas are lousy with republicans -- this is some sort of modern phenomenon. Anyone else notice this trend? I don't know too many democrats out in the woods up in Putnam County NY, but here in Northern Westchester which is an affluent more "urbane" area we enjoy a plethora of democrats. My Obama bumper sticker is greeted in my town here in N. Westchester with thumbs up. Up in Putnam, not so much.

1. This Alabama/Georgia bumpkin is a blue-to-the-bone Dem.
As are many of my family members. Please don't add to the red-state, blue-state crap-fest.

2. Yeah, that's a tricky row to hoe. I'm a farmer in Denny Hastert's district (IL)
and we elected a Dem for that seat during the last special election. I'm not sure you can stereotype "country bumpkins" (a phrase I wince at since every farmer I know is smart and much better informed than the average Joe Six Pack).

Beyond that, the area I used to live in - Wheaton, IL - perceived of itself just like Northern Westchester (I know the area - I spent many, many summers in Rye NY with family) and it was redder than blood. A despicable place full of self-righteous Rethug hypocrites.

sorry to slap you down. Welcome to DU but please know that stereotypes are not looked at too fondly here.

:hi:

3. Please Don't Do This
Before you can persuade rural voters to vote for Democrats, you have to look at their lives and lifestyles, how they make their livings, and how legislation affects them.

For a lot of people in rural areas, if they want to have decent jobs, the ONLY option they have is to go into business for themselves. Those business owners loathe Democrats because it seems there's no piece of costly regulation legislation a well-meaning Dem won't vote for. Most of these cats are good people who can't imagine pulling the shit the majors do, that brings down Big Brother.

4. This Minnesotan hick is a proud Dem.
I fancy myself an intellectual, philosophical type too, the two are not contradictory.

5. I consider myself to be both. you've lost me.
I'm a country boy living in the city and consider myself a good deal slicker than the urban types that I compete with. I munch on homemade fresh bread everyday while viewing the DJIA.

Yes, my life is a charade and as soon as this illusion truly tanks I'm going home.
