On Joe McCarthy in a skirt.

I often wonder where and when patriotism was conflated with "doing as the government tells you," no questions asked. No doubt, when thinking of patriotism, one might look at the American Revolution. Civil disobedience and dissention were at the core of our founding as a nation. A radical group of individuals thought it was completely and utterly unfair to be taxed, without having any say whatsoever in the establishment of that tax. These individuals saw the government as the force to guard man's natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That same radical group thought it was the absolute right of the governed, to "alter or abolish" their government if it became "destructive to its own ends." In fact, this radical group (who were against government authority), were known as "patriots." Those who were with the government were aptly named "loyalists." This radical patriot group I am referring to is commonly known as our founding fathers.

In modern America the founding fathers are held up as the epitome of what it means to be American. In schools, books, and popular wisdom these men are held up rightfully as our heroes. But does anyone think today, if these people acted like they did in 1776, they would be called patriots? Would they be held in such high esteem if they wrote a message online which called for the United States government to be altered or abolished? If George Washington warned about entangling foreign alliances would he be accused of emboldening the enemy? If Thomas Jefferson chided George Bush for spying on Americans without a warrant would he be called a soft on terrorism defeatist? I can only imagine what they would do with Patrick Henry, who of course is still revered in history to this day for saying "Give me liberty or give me death." My guess he would be committed to a mental institution.

Why do I bring this up, because Michelle Bachmann is un-American. I know this statement goes against my thesis in this writing... However, I write these words because I think after watching this woman speak on Hardball with Chris Matthews I have figured out something which is objectively American. Congresswoman Bachmann said:

"What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or Anti-America? I think the American people would love to see an expose like that."

Notice, she did not bother to define what "pro-America" is. The reason she hasn't is because she can't, she doesn't understand what she is saying.

The only thing which is "American" is an idea of being able to speak your mind. For this woman to equate liberalism with un-Americanism is disgusting. As much as I loathe the Republican Party, I would not call them un-American. For anyone to have political views, this does not make them un-American. However, for anyone who would automatically equate political ideology with being un-American, I can make an exception. For Joe McCarthy, for Congresswoman Bachmann (Joe McCarthy in a skirt), I will make an exception. YOU CONGRESSWOMAN ARE UN-AMERICAN AND OUGHT TO BE REPREMANDED BY CONGRESS, AND DEFEATED FOR RE-ELECTION.

1. This is a Palin clone--
5 kids, endorsed by NRA, lower taxes, she and hubby started small business, endorses hate-mongering, blah, blah, blah. This is why Palin is such a dangerous entity.

3. I think Palin is just stupid and is having her strings pulled by the
rethugs, will say whatever she's memorized the night before. Bachmann is smarter, and I think more dangerous because of it.
