"I want my money back." - GOP donors about Palin the Clothes Horse (Pale Horse)
GOP donors critical of Palin's pricey threads
By JEANNE CUMMINGS | 10/22/08

The Republican National Committee’s $150,000 investment in Sarah Palin’s wardrobe has prompted some teeth gnashing among the party’s big donors about its political sensibility and a feisty debate among campaign finance specialists about its legality.

“As a Republican Eagle and a maxed-out contributor to McCain’s general campaign, I’d like my money back – he can still have my vote,” complained one irate donor on Tuesday.

“I’m not one who says a candidate shouldn’t wear fine clothes,” he added. “I’d just like to think they were successful enough in the private sector to have afforded their wardrobe with their own money, not the party’s or the campaign’s, which is really our money as contributors.”

4. I like it that they will contribute the still-new clothes "to charity" shortly.
I imagine most charities don't see that many $2500 outfits coming in. They probably get more that cost, say, $148 or so.

15. Oooooo - good point: The infamous Checkers speech of Dick Nixon (R)
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 10:52 AM by SpiralHawk
Nixon whined and whined, and compained that he was good republicon who's wife wore a humble but allegedly respectable republicon 'cloth coat'

"Gosh darn it," Tricky D. said, "if plain cloth is good enuf for the proles, it's good enuf for me and the Mrs. Smirk."

Pundits should bring that Checkers-cloth coat speech up -- for Americans to consider about republicons and their, um, thingy about clothing.

16. The actual "cloth coat" comment from Nixon's Checkers speech:
"Well, that's about it. That's what we have. And that's what we owe. It isn't very much. But Pat and I have the satisfaction that every dime that we've got is honestly ours. I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she'd look good in anything."

Are the republicons telling us that Pale Clothes Horse Palin would not look good in a respectable Republicon cloth coat?

"he can still have my vote"

What? He doesn't like how McCain handled his contribution money during the campaign, but he's still going to trust him with his tax money later? And he actually says such illogical things out loud, to be quoted by the media?

Dayum.

edit: clarity

12. actually, FEC rules (codified into law in 2002) bar campaign from purchasing clothing
Whether or not the law extends to purchases of clothing for candidate by RNC is not as clear, althought there is a very strong argument that it is illegal.

19. They're Donating It To Charity After
And you know why? Because unless you are an entertainer and you buy a specific outfit for a performance, you don't get to deduct clothing expenses on taxes. That's why you often see tv talk show hosts and local newscasts scroll, "_____'s wardrobe provided by ..."

23. And they're so dense, they're just not getting it...
the hypocrisy, I mean.

Ms. "I'm just an everywoman-middle-class Jane Doe" shit goes right out the window when she wears designer clothing that maybe 3/4 of their constituency won't ever get to touch...never mind actually wear.

I saw in one blog/article where a woman said if she didn't dress like that, people would be running around saying she looks like crap.

Uh...not so.

It's entirely possible to dress nicely without spending megabucks and looking like a selfish little piglet for wearing designer stuff when half the country can't afford to pay the rent, for gods sake.

Clueless bastards, that's what they are, and it's getting harder and harder to figure out what's the stupidest thing they've done. It just seems to get worse (campaign-wise).
