Please forward this to anyone you know with pets. The food has been implicated in kidney failure and death in both dogs and cats. The manufacturer, , has recalled over 60 MILLION containers of dog and cat food and involves all canned and foil pack wet foods under the brand names Iams, Eukanuba, Petsmart (Authority), Safeway, Walmart and Kroger's. California Natural....Just started the habit, finished one can of Iams.

I think I'll just go back to their regular dry and give them chicken from my plate instead. They love the egg yolks I don't eat, too, nicely scrambled.

4. Sounds like rapeseed oil may have been used instead of Canola oil
...in the pet foods mentioned. The two oils are identical, except one, the Canola, is genetically modified to remove the toxic element of rapeseed. Real easy to confuse the two.

11. Damn, I just bought my room mates puppy Iams puppy food
in a pouch a few days ago. Puppy food is hard to find in a grocery store, I saw it, it was on sale, so I picked up 10 pouches.

Looks like the rest is going back to the store tomorrow.

Doesn't surprise me too much. Iams was a decent product before P&G bought them out a few years ago. Since then, it's just another "mainstream" pet food company.

Menu Foods Income Fund Announces Precautionary Dog and Cat Food Recall
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 16, 2007) -
NOT FOR RELEASE OVER US NEWSWIRE SERVICES
Attention Business/Financial Editors
Menu Foods Income Fund (the "Fund") (TSX:MEW.UN) today announced the precautionary recall of a portion of the dog and cat food it
manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches
manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are
contract-manufactured for some national brands.
Over the past several days, the Fund has received feedback in the United States (none in Canada) raising concerns about pet food
manufactured since early December, and its impact on the renal health of the pets consuming the products. Shortly after receipt of the first
complaint, the Fund initiated a substantial battery of technical tests, conducted by both internal and external specialists, but has failed to
identify any issues with the products in question. The Fund has, however, discovered that timing of the production associated with these
complaints, coincides with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier. The Fund stopped using this ingredient shortly after this
discovery and production since then has been undertaken using ingredients from another source.
At the same time, the Fund's largest customer, for which it manufactures on a contract basis, received a small number of consumer
complaints and has initiated its own recall. Furthermore, for the time being, the customer has put future orders for cuts and gravy products on
hold. This customer's cuts and gravy purchases in 2006 represented approximately 11% of the Fund's annual revenue.
"We take these complaints very seriously and, while we are still looking for a specific cause, we are acting to err on the side of caution" said
Paul K. Henderson, President and CEO, Menu Foods. "We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our products maintain the very
highest quality standards."
While the number of complaints has been relatively small, Menu is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the
health and well-being of pets is paramount to the Fund.
In addition to changing suppliers, for production after March 6, the Fund has increased testing of all raw materials and finished goods. It is
also working closely with regulatory authorities and its customers to learn more and will take whatever additional actions are appropriate. The
Fund estimates that based on currently available information, this recall could cost between $30 million and $40 million, which will be
financed from a combination of internally generated cash flow and bank credit facilities. Furthermore, the Fund is aggressively producing
product, utilizing a different supplier for the ingredient in question, to replenish customers as quickly as possible.
In order to determine whether cat and dog food in their possession is subject to recall, consumers should refer to the list of brand names
("listed products") at www.menufoods.com/recall. This will be available by 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007. Products not identified on the
website can continue to be used.
Menu is the leading North American private-label/contract manufacturer of wet pet food products sold by supermarket retailers, mass
merchandisers, pet specialty retailers and other retail and wholesale outlets. In 2006, the Fund produced more than one billion containers.

20. Yay!
I've been so anxious wondering if Purina Pro Plan was on there, although my husband said it probably wouldn't be.

I'm almost afraid to ask because I don't think our cats would eat anything else, but does anyone know if Purina has any abominable practices? I think it's owned by Nestle, which is probably evil like all huge conglomerates, but our cats really like it and they're healthy and at good weights with shiny soft coats and all that.

23. Menu Foods is no better than Iams in terms of animal cruelty...
See PETA's info about Menu Foods. Thus, any of the companies (Safeway, Walmart, Krogers, Nutro, Petsmart) that use Menu Foods as their contract manufacturer are supporting animal abuse.

21. Several of these are "Premium" pet food names.
When i first saw anything on this I was thinking it was some company that manufactures for store brands. I'm amazed at all the "name brand" pet foods on this recall.

I fed Iams brand for YEARS and had nothing but happy healthy cats on it. Suddenly (when they sold out) the cats' coats started looking and feeling like crap and the cats were puking it up more often. I quit feeding Iams and went to Science Diet and the coat quality came right back and the puking stopped. (Funny how THAT goes...)

Anyhow, NutraMax, Eukanuba and a few others on that list are sold in pet stores as "premium" brands. That should piss off anyone who has been paying more for the same crap off the same production lines as the house brand from the local grocery store.

Every day I swear I get closer to feeding that cat a raw food diet.

22. So that explains why the Nashville Cat was sick
She suddenly started sleeping WAY too much, she lost all her body fat, and her hair was becoming dull and brittle. She was turning her nose up at ALL cat food. I switched brands several times to find something she would eat.

She finally decided she liked Little Friskies, and overnight she started getting better! Her hair has its gloss back, and she's running around shadow boxing again. Her weight is also going back up.

Another crime solved.

26. My best pal and I live in a senor's development ~~ lots of pets.
And today I word processed a flier on the recall and we are heading out in a bit to have it copied ~~ about 200 copies since there are LOTS of pets in here ~~ and we are going to go house to house and distribute the fliers. We also plan to post a warning on the blackboard at the clubhouse and to leave fliers in the office.

We realized today that so many in our neighborhood do NOT know about this and their pets are at risk. Seniors are very close to their pets ~~ not that others are not ~~ but they bring so much companionship to the elderly. Although my pal and I are on the "young" end of being in a seniors only development, there are people in here in their 70s and 80s who have very beloved pets and what a tragedy if would be in their lives if these pets became ill and were lost to them. Some of these pets are elderly just like their owners and most certainly do not need to get any of these harmful pet foods.

So, thank you to DU for the tons of warnings about this danger to all our pets! Another reason to love the DU and think it is just the BEST place!

I bought them 2 weeks ago, but just after that, switched to an organic, human quality brand (flint river ranch, if any ones' interested) and the pouches have sat in my pantry unused.

I feel like my cat may have dodged a bullet.

28. Add Hills' Science Diet to list of recalled foods.
Sorry everyone, for yet another email on this. If, however, the major brands, like Eukanuba and Hills would have allowed Menu Foods to include their names on the Menu Food's website list, all these extra emails would have been unnecessary. I must say, I'm really disappointed in HIll''s decision to not have their name included on the list, but instead chose to release their own recall announcement. It makes it extremely difficult for consumers to track this critical information. Shame on Hills, and, for the same reason, P&G.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu Foods’ Nationwide U.S. and Canadian recall of Specific Canned Cat Foods.
Topeka, KS (March 16, 2007) – In response to the recent Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, Hill’s® Pet Nutrition, Inc. has announced a voluntary precautionary recall in the United States and Canada of a very small number of canned cat products that are co-manufactured by Menu.
Hill’s is voluntarily recalling the following products:

1. Science Diet® Kitten Savory Cuts® Ocean Fish 3 oz. and 5.5 oz.
2. Science Diet® Feline Adult Savory Cuts® Beef 5.5 oz.

4. Science Diet® Feline Adult Savory Cuts® Ocean Fish 5.5 oz.
5. Science Diet® Feline Senior Savory Cuts® Chicken 5.5 oz.

No other Hill’s products are affected by this recall.
Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., is taking this precautionary step to protect the health and well being of your pets. Hill’s has received no reported cases of illness. Consumers of other pet food brands manufactured by Menu Foods have reported a small number of cases of cats becoming ill with loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy which are potential signs of kidney failure.
This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately. Consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in your pet. All Science Diet products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-445-5777 or visit www.HillsPet.com for details.
