A tale of the effigies
In my sociology class today, a rabid Right-Winger actually told me it was a double standard that the people in California weren't being held responsible for the effigies, but in Kentucky they were. Let me point out the idiocracies in her statement, as there are many:

1. The man accused in California got away with the first count under the premise it is being done on HIS property and he is protected by the freedom of expression clause (damn that consitution!)
2. He is actually currently being tried for a hate crime instead, althought I doubt it will gain much traction (Hate crimes are hard to come by when their plantiffs are whiter than rice)
3. The people who did this in Kentucky displayed it on PUBLIC university grounds, clearly a violation of at least trespassing.
4. It is a big deal, the public display of lynching a black man whomever he is, in a state that has had such a divisive and racially charged past.

After I pointed out these things, she actually had the nerve to say "slavery happened like 200 years ago, get over it."

It was at this point I wanted to slap her, but somehow managed to keep the indignation inside.

Now, nevermind the fact that I dont have to "get over" anything (I am caucasian), she seems to think that racism in this country ended with the abolishment of slavery. We had this fun thing called the Civil Rights Movement and segregation, among other things, that happened oh like you know, 50 years ago abouts...

It is one thing to be ignorant of facts, and I try to be as respectful as I can be when I debunk those repeating FOX's talking points, but is wholly another to be woefully ill-informed and repeat it as gospel.
