Bail out the automakers IF...
they agree to start mass production of the fuel efficient vehicles (plug-ins, etc.) they've already developed.

1. Or not bail them out, allow them to own their failure, go away and whoever

replaces them can do that.

5. True. but...
don't they already have the infrastructure to get the cars out there quicker, more efficiently? Plus, wouldn't saving all those jobs stabilize the economy better in the short term? Not that I necessarily want to help the big corporations, but they've got a lot of innocent employees that it would be good to keep employed.

7. You think they are going to burn their plants down when they go out of business?
The infrastructure will still be there.

The concerns about the short term and employees are much like saying the invention of electricity would ruin candle workers abilities to make a living.

3. Aaaand we figure out a way to make sure those jobs don't get outsourced, too. That's what I'd like,
more than anything else.

9. OK. Thermodynamics be damned, and the DNR on the patient be ignored.
Cash out the PBGC, and realize your paradigm is changing, get farther in the long run.
