Local Newspapers Cover Rising Number of Racist Anti-Obama Actions in Small Towns
Source: Editor&Publisher

....Away from the spotlight, many local newspapers around the country have covered recent incidents of racially-motivated reactions to last week’s election, from flags hung upside down to the dangling of nooses and cross-burnings. As we noted last week, a couple in northern New Jersey who had an Obama sign on their front lawn woke up to find the charred remains of a cross out there. Local residents today announced a "unity march" to protest the still-unsolved incident.

Now come these fresh reports.

The Associated Press revealed today, "Police on eastern Long Island are investigating reports that more than a dozen cars were spray painted with racist graffiti, reportedly including a message targeting President-elect Barack Obama. The graffiti included racist slurs and sexually graphic references. At least one resident in the quiet Mastic neighborhood told Newsday her son's car was scribbled with a message threatening to kill Obama."

Employees at Hampel's Key and Lockshop in Traverse City, Michigan, flew an American flag upside down last Wednesday protesting of the new president-elect, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. One worker used a racial slur during an interview with the Record-Eagle: "(The inverted flag is) an international signal for distress and we feel our country is in distress because the n----- got in," said Hampel’s employee Rod Nyland, who later apologized for the comment, according to the Record-Eagle.

Also in Michigan, in Midland, a man dressed in full Ku Klux Klan regalia walked around toting a handgun and waving an American flag. Initially denying it, the man eventually admitted to police that the display was a reaction to the Obama victory....

In Pennsylvania, an interracial couple in Apolacon Township discovered the remains of a burned cross in their front yard....

Authorities in Temecula, Calif., found spray-painted graffiti on a city sidewalk containing a swastika and anti-Obama slogan.

From today's Los Angeles Times: "Vandals spray-painted swastikas and racial slurs on a house and several cars in Torrance that displayed campaign signs or bumper stickers for President-elect Barack Obama, authorities said Tuesday. The incidents occurred Saturday night in the Hollywood Riviera section of the city, said Sgt. Bernard Anderson. Four separate incidents were reported the next day, he said. No arrests have been made.

"At one house, the phrase 'Go Back to Africa' was spray-painted across the wall, in addition to a racial epithet on the garage door, Anderson said. Several parked vehicles on the streets were spray-painted with racial slurs, he said."

Students at Baylor University woke up on Election Day to a rope tied like a noose hanging from a tree outside of Morrison Hall, according to college newspaper The Lariat: “Later, verbal altercations occurred outside of Penland Residence Hall. A group of Obama supporters were walking around shouting 'Obama' and then passed a group of white men outside who made threatening and racist remarks, said Emmanuel Orupabo, Arlington senior,” according to the Lariat.

Another post-election noose incident happened in Maine....

1. I am not surprised, but I am disappointed
to know that the hate that Satan Sara spewed during the campaign worked to well.

:(

2. Thinking about Palin's comments, and hate talk leading to Rwanda genocide.
Thinking about hate mongering radio and tv promoting violence against groups. Thinking I need to write McCain again, again, and advise him to start speaking out, LOUD, against this sort of stuff. Thinking about holding Palin responsible in any way for promoting violence.

3. On the inverted flag thing, I can understand that, if it's not the real flag
(on a flagpole). Yes, it's a "distress signal".

If it's on a sticker on your car, like I did, I can see that. But not as a real flag flying over something.

In fact, I got the idea from people on this board for that "protest".

Now, I didn't call Bush a cracker when I did it ...

5. Unfortunately I expected this type
of ignorance once Obama was elected. The question is why the hell isn't this being covered in the M$M. They are pushing this post-racial society BS. While I agree things are much better - there are still quite a few folks out there that were at Palin's hate rallies.

13. There may be the same thinking that came out for the 60-70s riots.
If it is not televised it will just be disconnected incidents. The argument was that when the media showed the riots and protests that lead to other riots and protests. Who knows what the reason is for MSM not to show them.

6. That's sister sarah's "real America", right? Bigotville?
I'm not a bit surprised either. That's where some of the smallest minds are preserved from the outside world. Not saying they're ALL idiots and morons, but they have a definite higher per capita moron rate going for them.

You can be a bigot and an idiot in a small town. Your family will still love you.

7. Possible case even here in Blue Massachcusetts
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2008/11/12/election_backlash_feared_in_church_fire/

We have cause for optimism and pride in what has been accomplished but we humans must remain vigilant against the ugly, harmful aspects of our nature.

10. I live in Massachussets, and this does not surprise me.
If you ignore Boston, and some other well-to-do areas, Massachusetts has the usual b.s. going on: Ignorant people who cannot think past their own noses.

expect things to be different with our new president?

Don't forget that Kennedy was killed, Reagan was shot, and Ford was an assassination target.

ON EDIT: change spelling from Regan to Reagan

12. Regan was not shot - she was possessed. But in real life, Raygun and Ford were targetted
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 08:13 PM by T Wolf
by certifiable nuts who acted, not out of political will, but from insanity (e.g., Jody Foster ).

Jack Kennedy was murdered BECAUSE OF a political agenda of the corporate right.

That is the difference. In this country, the left does not assassinate. We do not have the courage of our convictions that our European neighbors possess.

14. Racism...
Alive and Well. God Help Us!

These people are bigoted idiots and there opinions should be taken as nothing more than the racist rantings of lunatics. They are not people who are criticizing Obama for his policies politics etc. They are criticizing a man because of the color of his skin!
These people won't be able to escape the long arm of the law if they try any b.s. One thing that I find solace in is that I am sure that the majority of these bigots are old, possibly with a foot in the grave already. I don't doubt there are some misguided youths amongst them,
But know this America, they are a dying breed. good riddance!

16. Hate crime motivated by Obama...
will be taken more seriously by secret service and FBI...If anyone comes in contact with it, authorities should be contacted. If you are in a hick town, don't even bother with local police...they may not care (meaning they are racist too). Go straight to the Secret Service.

Secret Service will probably be hiring more people with Obama in office. They need more people on the domestic front to protect Obama.
