17. My,
is that great! This part, in my mind, is too true: Republicans have grown weaker everywhere but the white rural South -- the region that remains the least educated and least diverse.

This is one of the reasons I shy from the South when thinking of relocating.

20. Just pick your areas.....
I moved South about 3 years ago and I LOVE where I live! There are some very progressive enclaves in the South, and I live in one of them. I live in the Asheville area -- beautiful, wonderful place to live. There are many more great areas in the South -- believe me, I took that into consideration before I moved!

As a Southerner I know where you are coming from, but we are not worse than the "Heartland" I think that will be the area that the republicans will introduced their new "Midwest strategy" to replace their failing "Southern strategy".

51. good southern areas
Yes, there are some great places to live in the south(I live in Texas). I like to call them 'bubbles of sanity'. They exist in big cities like Houston, Dallas, and Austin. You'll find very progressive communities and stable economic bases in university towns that are smaller, yet livable. (San Marcos, Nacadoches) One of the nice things about the south is the weather. We don't have much winter, but you do have to learn to live with the heat. That makes it cheaper to live here. Good luck with your search.

Jefferson County, Alabama, where Birmingham is, you know, THAT Birmingham, went for Obama, and we have a blue congressional district. I'm really happy to live here at this time, as you can feel the energy in the air and see the smiles on people's faces. No dogs and hoses here...

The one where he talked about outlawing free enterprise, forcing women to get abortions, and closing all the churches? I'm pretty sure that was when he promised to go door to door (with metal detectors) to confiscate everybody's guns.

Did you miss it?

I am somewhat concerned about that.

As for Zombie invasions and such, I have enough Mosin-Nagants, Mausers, etc. and ammunition to arm every household on my block. I'm not worried about lack of firepower.

16. I have one on order.
It was something I was thinking about for the 200 yard target range. I was actually thinking of a bolt-action Olympic type model next spring, but opted for an auto-loader with detachable magazine. They're available now. They might not be next year. Just thinking ahead is all.

I still voted for Obama, but that was despite his support for further restrictions, not because of it. SOMEBODY has to pull our economy out of the toilet and it sure as hell wasn't going to be McCain.

And this will hurt us come the midterms if there are any new bills proposed.

eta: Fortunately, there appears to be some subtle changes going on since change.org has removed some references to supporting the AWB. Obama needs to come out and say that he will veto any new Federal gun bans.

65. no bulk sales and magazine limits
A federal limit on bulk sales of handguns is number one on my list. One handgun a month.

No one sane is buying a dozen 9mm's a month to add to his personal collection. Here in NY we have significant hand gun crime. Many of the weapons recovered have origins traced to states that do not have bulk sales restrictions (such as Vermont) these guns are often sold through private sales to individuals in other states that have stricter laws( such as New York)

Instead of a ridiculous state to state list of so-called "Assault" weapons that are banned. Just limit the magazines on all weapons to 10 rounds and let everyone buy what ever weapon they want.

67. I like the "bulk sales" thing. I need to think a bit more on the mag caps...
Edited on Thu Nov-13-08 01:48 PM by jmg257
At 1st I would disagree. I know when limited ( I am in NY too), I bought "better" calibers instead. i.e. Why limit myself to 10 rounds of 9mm (it's traditional claim to fame was capacity - but I still prefered a few less rounds of a better caliber on duty), when I could have 10 rounds of .40 or even .45 for CCW. I would go the same way with .223 vs .308.

I have been (happily) able to get standard cap mags for my 92F and AR due to the grandfathering, but avoid guns like the newer FNs 'cause of cap limits.

Hmmm...

Thanks for sharing!

Obama never let go of supporting reauthorizing the Assault Weapons Ban, and now that he will be president and have Democratic controlled houses in congress, I think there is a good chance it will be renewed.

You may or may not know that many of the guns listed or described in the AWB legislation are popular, modern, ergonomic firearms that are useful for target shooting and self-defense (hunting too, but less so). These were not fully-automatic weapons, but rather SEMI-automatic weapons.

I'm bought an AR-15 lower recently because I can shoot lots of different calibers through it with the proper upper and magazines.

Prices could double on the pre-existing firearms (especially if an AWB reauthorization comes without another sunset).

its more likely than ever that I wouldn't be able to purchase that gun in the future.

My reasons are these:
Self-defense: An AR15 is much better in most situations for home defense than even the venerable shotgun.

Target shooting: The modularity of the AR15 allows me to put a long range high end upper for high precision or a .22lr upper for inexpensive recreational shooting and self-defense training.

Investing: AR15s hold their price well even without a ban in place. With a ban, they could double.

Collecting: Yes, I do collect guns a little bit like the way people collect sports cards.

For my son: He is only 3 years old, but I hope he'll like shooting like his Daddy. I'm buying somethings with him for when he is old enough to shoot.

They were much cheaper, and now I don't have to stand in line with a bunch of republicans.

61. And if looking for "why" we should not allow govt such power, then Bush is a poster child.
There will always be a 50/50 chance we might not agree with the next winner, so why give any of those in charge power they should not have?

69. That's a really bad idea, lady
Under his Marxist regime, you'll have to share them with your neighbors. My advice to you is to hold off until everyone has bought, and then you'll get them for free under the redistribution of weapons.
