wtf? did anyone see that weird little exchange on hardball?
that black republican strategist was arguing with pat buchanan and pat told him to "examine yourself" when the strategist suggested that the republican party needs to examine itself, and i thought, for the rest of the interview, when the strategist was talking about the personal attack buchanan used on him i thought thats what he was talking about, but all of a sudden at the end, matthews and buchanan ask him what the attack was, he said buchanan told him to move to canada.

3. I liked it when the black guy told Buchanan "the country is starting to look more like me
than you", and that Buchanan didn't get it.

12. But secondwind, what does that even mean?
What does he want them to do that they haven't done? He unknowingly endorsing the Democratic Party. They are again moving in the Neoconservative direction, because the true conservatism, that of the last 60 years, doesn't work. So they want to be conservative on some issues, and then liberal on others, with the party full of more hypocrisy (if possible) than it's been throughout its history. They just don't offer a damn thing. This is a call for them to cave, and give in on certain things, just to get votes, with a party that ends up in the same position its been in the last 28 years: full of the social conservatives vs. the faux-fiscal conservatives. This begs to question, what is their relevance? The Neoconservative philosophy is, do anything just to get into power -- bring people along that creates a party that's all over the place. No cohesiveness.

What Conservatives always bring away from losses is, "we didn't go to the right far enough."

They've run out of warped ideas. The Bush years were their last chance. The world has passed them by. They don't have any other incarnations left. Neo-conservatism is their only chance now, and they will have the Bush years all over again. There's no way for them to get elected. They should just split into three factions, which I think is what is ultimately going to happen, and when I say split, I mean that they're going to start third parties. They either all play with neo-conservatism again, trying to include all three divisions that make up their party (social, fiscal, neo), which ensures their collapse, or they get cohesive, and irrelevant, and not big enough in numbers to ever win an election.

I'm crying my eyes out, as you can guess.

25. I think what the black guy (Mike Paul) meant was ...
... that the country is looking "younger" and (probably) less white than Buchanan. He said a few times that Buchanan is getting old and even hinted that Buchanan's ideas were old.

As far as the "move to Canada" comment, I may be wrong, but I think he was referring to previous comments by Buchanan and not necessarily from that particular on-air conversation.

4. I was rushing on to post about this.
The irony is, the black guy was just revealing what the Right needs, but what the need is what the Democratic Party already is. He is outing the fact that the Republican Party offers nothing.

The guy was almost in tears. I thought it was weird enough that he said, "personal attacks." Then when he came up with the, "move to Canada," it was like the Twilight Zone. lmao.

If they're still pushing and defending Palin, they're done as a Party, and I mean, D-O-N-E!

18. I saw it too, the discourse
deteriorated rapidly at the point, no one knew what the other was even talking about.

Agree. the repugs are ideologically fallow at this point, with a rogue Ala. Gov. running around after camera's like a bull moose in heat.

5. I'll have to catch it later
If the Black strategist was Ron Christie...that guy is a douche. So is Pat. They all are but Ron Christie just gets to me. He was an aide to Cheney and spouts such garbage all the time. Just an all out douche.

catch his full name, but I think his first name is Mike.

But that Christie dude just irritates me. So smug with that crossed eye! I do like the way that Matthews has been wiping his ass with him lately though. That gives me a chuckle.

That's how few Black Republicans there are. Once you mentioned the crossed eye, I knew exactly who you were talking about.

If I were him, I would leave the GOP and come over to our side. As is, that narrow-minded faction will never change.

7. I saw that too.. obviously the guy is in the wrong party.. it is true
that Blacks or Hispanics for that matter look like guests in a republican meeting and/or convention.. they seem to not belong there, not because the majority of GOP supporters are white but because what the party stands for... GOP is not inclusive to all..

that guy should leave now along with the other fellow Chris Mathews invites on his show all the time..

27. Latinos tend to join the Republican party because of the social conservatism
I had members of my family who were Republicans. It took awhile to convince them that their spiritual life was personal, that they could continue to practice in a secular society, and that the Republican party has nothing for them unless they liked belonging to a party that thought they were inferior.

8. It WAS bizarre. Pat got offended when the black guy told him that
basically there aren't enough old white people to keep the party going and they need to open up to the changing face of America. Pat didn't like being reminded that white people could become a minority soon.

13. Actually Kahuna, Pat is Right. He's Wrong, But He's Right
What is the other guy calling for? We already have that party, the Democratic Party. They are literally putting on display the irrelevance of the Republican Party. What's the point of them?

Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 01:28 AM by Biswas
So funny. I've watched it like five times now. Mike Paul, the great big guy.

FWIW, he did vote for Obama. http://www.mikepaulblog.com/blog/

Then, in keeping with the Twilight Zone theme, Matthews had Ryan Lizza and very similarly-named AND very similar-looking Chris Cillizza.

Tonight's Hardball was the most exciting thing since the election.

23. Its almost a matter of if the Republicans will be desperate enough for power
to resume being a rational party interested in governing or if their distorted world view drives them to implosion. They remain dangerous but time is against them 10-20 years from now as things stand they will be marginalized as a national party and maybe that is what needs to happen for them to find their balance and role again.

24. I think he misheard what Buchanan said...
...and misjudged the content based on Buchanan's previous behavior and statements.

Actually, I thought the guy sounded more reasoned than most Republicans I've heard in a long while. He's the same age I am and has some great points about the GOP's relevance on the future. They must adapt or die and those like Buchanan believe adaption is betrayal. To Pat, without the guidelines of yesteryear, they just aren't Republicans.
