During this holiday season, we are requesting that you ask jewelers about the origin of their rubies. “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. On that day, millions of Americans will head to the malls to purchase holiday gifts for their wives, husbands, girlfriends, partners, etc. This year, please let it mark the beginning of your “secret shopping” for Burma.

Why do we need “secret shoppers”?

Similar to how “Blood Diamonds” fueled civil war in Sierra Leone and other African countries, the sale of Burmese “Blood Rubies” helps Burma’s military regime finance their atrocities against Burma’s ethnic minorities and their violent suppression of peaceful Monks and democracy activists.

I take it that their is a hope to return the name to Burma when its current miitary government is overthrown?
