I say we make merit pay universal across all professions.
Teachers should get paid based on how well their students perform on standardized tests. That's genius. The guy who came up with that one must have done really well on standardized tests. It's so smart, we should do the same thing with all professions.

Doctors- Doctors should be paid based on how sick their patients are. Clearly, pediatricians and cosmetic surgeons are better at their jobs than emergency room surgeons and oncologists.

Police officers- Their merit pay should be tied to the number of crimes in their community. Podunk, Nebraska has lower crime than Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And therefore their police should be paid better.

TV weathermen- Better pay for when the weather is nice.

IRS agents- They should be paid on commission based on the number of audits they do.

2. I've been in a situation where it didn't work for a corporation!

This outfit went whole hog for QC-9000 and Continuous Improvement and whatever other managerial fad came down the pike, but the managers had NO idea how the equipment actually worked, so they rewarded supervisors for the wrong things (not to mention punishing supervisors whi actually got the job done but didn't meet metrics!)

3. Merit
is not all bad, unless you are the fuckup that makes everyone else carry your load. Doctors are paid on merit, those at sloan kettering are paid more than podunk memorial.

And they provide better treatment.

This in not anti union, I work in union and non union shops and a shitty machinist is not tolerated at either.
