Missouri Considers Decriminalizing Margarine
Law Dates To 1895

POSTED: 10:44 am CST December 16, 2008
UPDATED: 10:51 am CST December 16, 2008

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A southwest Missouri lawmaker wants to decriminalize margarine.

House member Sara Lampe said Tuesday that she plans to file legislation repealing Missouri's butter law, which dates to 1895.

The law restricts the sale, possession or shipment of imitation butter and bans yellow-tinted varieties. Those dealing contraband dairy products can be fined up to $100 and jailed for up to a month.

Lampe, a Springfield Democrat, said the law doesn't make sense anymore.

Enforcement is up to the state Department of Agriculture. And spokeswoman Misti Preston said the butter laws are no longer enforced.

Preston said the regulations likely were created to protect Missouri's dairy industry.

10. Good. And they should tax the hell out of it, too
Use the money to finance butter-addiction programs and margarine-fuel projects.

13. Wow, that's odd. Judging by what I've seen in the grocery stores for the past forty years
That law has been ignored for a long, long time. We've got every type of margarine on the shelves that other states have, yellow tinted and all. Have had since the sixties.

But hey, if this is what it takes to keep our legislature occupied and not fucking the state over, I'm all for it:shrug:

14. After that
Maybe we can get rid of the law that says I can't hunt whales in Oklahoma, or that my friends in Kansas can't eat snakes on Sundays.

15. Fine example of why all laws should have a sunset provision
Indeed, I wish this were a constitutional imperative. Our body of law is hopelessly unwieldy and excessively subject to populist sentiment in all its fickleness.

22. Yes, had I known there was this law I would've called "911"
...and had the store owner arrested! But Missouri officials always know which side of their bread is buttered...

23. Butter is better
But seriously, I remember my dad telling me that in the depression the margarine came with packets of yellow food coloring. They couln't sell it yellow, so the housewife was assumed to add the coloring to make it more palatable to the eye.

I don't use margarine. Nasty shit. Butter, olive and grapeseed oils for me thanx.
