Seriously though. Is Obama really that tone-deaf? WTF was he thinking?! This move isn't going to win him any converts, but it's sure going to create some more infidels.

17. I don't like it.
I thought Warren ambushed President-elect Obama at his forum. If I'd gone through that, I wouldn't have anything to do with him. However, it appears that pragmatism outweighs emotion by a LONG shot for our president-elect. He obviously feels that this move is good for something. Or perhaps they're buddies who viewed the ambush as just politics. I don't know. I just know that I don't like Warren and I don't think he ought to get to do the inaugural invocation.

117. Pretty simple
He's trying to look post-partisan. So long as he does that, all that will happen is pissing off his actual base (that is, us) and making a fool of himself in front of the people he's trying to impress.

every new presidency does stupid crap like this as a "gesture of goodwill" in some form or another. I'm going to second (third? Fourth?) the reccomendation of Rev. Wright... but I know that would never happen.

My advice? Slap your head and groan, but don't read too much into it. This is Obama's "empty gesture to people who won't care" moment. He's still new at this, remember. He's good, but not perfect.

130. Yes he is more than homophobic ........
He would like to take rights from a lot of us and return to the good ole days where women died in childbirth or in back alleys.

"He criticized Obama's answers at the Faith Forum he hosted before the election and vowed to continue to pressure him to change his views on the issue of reproductive choice."

"to dance with them what brung you." The damn "good ole club" sure didn't do that. I have defended Obama all over the web since practically the day after the election. This I cannot defend. To ask a bigot like Warren to share in the ceremonies is unconscionable. I'm skipping the ceremony and closing my checkbook.

Not that we were just going to have to settle for being JUNIOR partners in whatever operation sets up shop.

55. At first I was pissed too. However, after some thought, I have
come to the conclusion that this is simply a political move on Obama's part to reach out to the fundies. He's not relinquishing any power to them or opening up the door for them to sneak in. Obama is not all of a sudden, going to kill the stem cell research or try to get Roe vs. Wade reversed. He's trying to be everyone's president. He needs everyone on board in order for us to get out of this mess. I feel Obama asking Rick Warren to to the invocation is an attempt to bring the fundies into the fold. That's all. But make no doubt about it, if Rick Warren or his ilk overstep their bounds by trying to influence or manipulate Obama on any of his decisions, he'll put them in their place. The reality is these people are future voters which Obama will need in order to win in 2012 where the top GOP opponents are an Evangelical, Baptist and Mormon. He's playing the game. The difference between Bush and Obama is intelligence and that he can't and won't be manipulated by them. He talks about this in his book "The Audacity of Hope". I have full confidence in Obama.

are the people who voted AGAINST him and who will always disagree us and him on everything.

Does there EVER come a time when the Democratic coalition stops being told to shut up and wait?

When we stopped being dissed for Obama's notion of "the greater good"?

What will be the excuse if this goes on AFTER 2012?

Remember, Clinton was supposedly going to be GREAT in his second term.

242. How about reaching out to me?
It is obvious that Obama's super cool political mind will not allow him to insult rightwingers or Republicans. He does everything he can to see that they feel all cuddly and warm in his arms. However, he has no such qualms when it comes to gays or women. Since most of us will fall into line in the name of "faith in him" no matter what he does, he has no need to court us, or to give us anything. Because his followers are just as blind, he is just as dangerous as Bush, only more subtle. This is an absolutely disgusting slap in the face, and not to notice it is to prove him right--he can walk all over the people that worked for him and put him in and they will smile beatifically.

249. true its not a political mistake but
its an ethical one. However, Obama didn't win because of gay support. He won because across the board americans voted for him. Prop 8 won because a lot of minority dems do not support it, and they came out to vote Obama into office. Obama himself, came out against gay marriage so I don't know why there's a surprise here anyway. You win some, you lose some.
Let's all remember the bigger picture.

It's bad enough that everyone is complaining about something minor that hasn't even happened yet, now are we to righteously criticize made-up, hypothetical events that definitely will not happen? Why?

I'm sympathetic about your loss, I just don't see how your comment applies to the Warren question. Nor why there even is a "Warren question".

278. Yeah great point
Why would we want a liberal man of god to stand up and represent? Why seize on any symbolism that would be useful to our cause when we can make even that subordinate to making nice with the conservatives.

You do realize to justify the support of the progressives, without which this victory would have been impossible, there will have to be a very aggressive, public, and dramatic policy put forth.

DLC triangulating will not really inspire or accomplish much, after all what do we have left that we can compromise on?

84. I'm shocked, too
BTW: I was trying to figure out the difference between invocation and benediction. Basically, I think the invocation comes first and the benediction is essentially the last word, as I understand it. Warren is leading off with the invocation. Lowery will do the benediction, which will, it seems, give him the last word. Maybe, the effect will feel like a moving from past to future. OK, that still doesn't make me feel much better.

104. Tinfoil time: Could this be Rove's greatest triumph?
I swear we're going to eat ourselves alive before Inauguration Day has even come and gone. And perhaps with good reason.

Hoodwinking the Left or the Right works the same basic way: Create a huge disturbance with a social issue -- legitimate or not -- and then, while everyone's thoroughly distracted, roll back regulations, destroy unions, further privatize the shrinking public sector, and generally rob the Treasury blind. (That's essentially the phenomenon that Thomas Frank discussed in "What's the Matter with Kansas?")

But wait a minute.

This is Obama not Bush. And Rove is not supposed to be his advisor.

Then how can this happen?

Something about this decision just doesn't smell right.

Frankly, despite Obama's pattern of misguided overtures toward "bipartisanship," I really can't believe he's this tone-deaf. After all, choosing Warren will win him very few friends and is almost certain to alienate a lot of supporters. A lot. Even those people who stuck with him following the selections of Emmanuel, Summers, Gates, etc., are starting to break off at this point.

I can believe that Obama may secretly be a hawk or that he's a closet DLCer, but an enabler for a backward, homophobic minister who preaches the Gospel of Money? It just doesn't make sense. Obama is a smart and savvy guy and yet this is a very self-destructive, ham-handed decision. Worse than that, it's a punch to the solar plexus and a knee to the groin for some of his most ardent supporters.

So was he somehow forced or tricked into this choice? That's what I'm wondering.

118. I'm only shocked that its happening so hard, so fast.
Besides his speeches--and speeches are animals that live off vague language--he's ideas have always seemed a combination of hard-right (Summers, Holder, Council on Foreign Relations) and traditional "Great Society" (public works programs, "green"). I expect the combination of the two will be "public works initiatives managed by a subsidiary of a subsidiary of Halliburton." He is worse on faith-based funding than even Bush. I'm really curious to see what happens with the labor appointments.

To me, this is message being sent out to us: you have no allies, including me. Expect nothing.

121. Just Say NO to Rick Warren ET AL...
Separate the Church from the State already!

It does not matter who is giving the invocation. The whole idea of a religious invocation is ridiculous: this is government not an open religious forum.

It were better if someone were to stand up and read the Constitution to everyone. There are better and more relevant pieces of literature to cite for inspiration:

works by Jefferson
works by Paine
works by Washington
works by Cicero
works by Seneca
works by Plato
works by Popper
works by enlightenment philosophers
works by Marx
works by Adam Smith

Any of these along with an explanation or a questioning of why we are where we are at this moment in time would be better than a formulaic appeal to any particular supernatural being whose value system is inevitably fixed at a point centuries if not milennnia before the present day.

However, if the invocation must be done, let's make the content fit the practice and find a priest to invoke the Powerful Storm-God of Hatti, Ishtar of the Countryside, and the Thousand Gods to witness Obama's oath! (Unless of course you would dare to discriminate against the Hittite religion, you dog!)

124. I don't think Rick Warren deserves the honor of speaking at the Inaugural
It might be one thing not to approve of gay marriage, I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. But to give it to someone who actively supported Prop 8, who made it his business to deny others a right we all enjoy, is a bit much. I don't think he deserves the honor of speaking at the Inauguration. I can understand why gays might feel like it was a slap in the face. Just makes me sad.

He asked his congregants to vote for Bush in 2004. I don't understand why Obama would have this man do the invocation. In FACT, why is there a RELIGIOUS invocation needed when this country was founded on the freedom of religion? No wonder this whole country is f'd up.

Not to mention his theological stances. And most obvious of all, he set up Barack with that joint appearance with John McCain.

This is utter garbage. I'm not a religious person, but there are many fine priests, pastors, rabbis and others who would lend dignity to the proceeedings and a true sense of compassion. This fraud isn't it. Shocking.

157. a call for solidarity
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 10:16 PM by Two Americas
"Post partisanship" means letting the right wingers into the discussion. When you let them in anywhere, you run the risk of letting them in everywhere.

I stand in solidarity with the GLBT community, without hesitation and without qualification. Many have described very well how destructive and insulting this is.

I trust there will be no name-calling, no personal attacks nor smears, no accusations of disloyalty leveled against those who object to this inaugural invocation selection. Virtually all people here will stand in solidarity with the GLBT community without question.

Now...

For those supporting sustainable agriculture and safe food, they see the selection of Vilsack for a cabinet position as wrong, yet have been under vicious attack for expressing that position.

Those who are deeply disturbed about foreign policy have expressed their reservations about Gates, and come under attack for that.

Environmentalists have reservations about the Salazar appointment - and they have been mocked and ridiculed and smeared.

I could go on and on as everyone here well knows.

One common smear leveled at the "far leftists" - anyone expressing any reservations about any cabinet appointment, where the appointees are in a position to do more than send a message, but actually set and control policy - has been to call the critics "a minority" - not important, not to be taken seriously, who are just pushing their narrow personal agenda and who should be despised and ignored.

Rights denied to any threatens the rights of all.

- The right of people to be adequately housed and fed, and have access to medical care.

- The right of people to organize in the workplace and bargain collectively.

- The right of the people to be free from arbitrary arrest, detention and torture.

- The right of the people to privacy; to be free from wiretaps and spying by the government.

- The right of the people to control public resources and public utilities.

- The right of the people to have a free press, and fair access to media.

- The right of the people to be free from war crimes committed in their name, and financed by them.

Those criticizing the cabinet appointments are motivated by a desire to protect those rights, and they have just as much justification to be alarmed by the appointments as we do to be alarmed about the selection for the inaugural invocation. Certainly, even if we disagree with those who believe that the cabinet appointments threaten those rights, can we not at the very least agree that people have the right to express those reservations and to be heard and taken seriously, and to be free from the name-calling and attacks when they express their opinions?

Are we ready to stand together? In each area, the enemy is the same. Can we not yet see that?

He has NO value that I can discern.

That said - I'm assuming the Obama team made a calculated move choosing him. He is the 'pastor figurehead' to many of those who voted AGAINST Obama.

Obama is trying to pull in as many Americans as possible - he knows how bad things are going to get over the next few years.

This country is in a divided, polarized, propaganda (religious included)induced state of cognitive dissonance.

I'm assuming this is a very well calculated move..... Honestly, WHY would he pick this parasite if not out of NEED.

The next few years (+/-) are gonna REALLY SUCK. He needs to have as many of us as he can pulling TOGETHER.

It's not gonna be pretty.

just like with Bush, it keeps getting worse and worse. I'm not saying any other Democratic presidential candidate might not have picked this creep to do that religious crap ( yeah, I'm angry), all I'm saying is that I didn't think Obama would be bringing all that much "change" politically. I feel that his election has helped in other ways, historically for us and to the rest of the world, but....ok..I'll stop and take a breath and hope Obama gets past this, too, and still does great things. Geez. I guess we will always have to kiss Christian, uh, cheeks. I wish Obama and all of them would read what so many of the founders of this country had to say on this subject. grrr

194. Why is there even a need to invoke some imaginary sky-spook, when the country has REAL problems?
I'm REC-ing this because I think anyone giving an inaugural invocation is wrong.

195. Obama indicated that he would make mistakes. Count this as one of them.
In the whole country, he couldn't find one wonderful woman minister or rabbi? One theologian who could bridge the fundies and the "rest of us" gap with some well spoken words about our common humanity?

He scraped the bottom of the barrel for this one.

Why do we need to have invocation? Lets change that, I will use a Fundie argument. The founding fathers in their wisdom decided that there needed to be a distinct seperation between church and state so that one did not influence the other.

Obama can just skip it, having warren in the mix just leaves a suspicion that Obama may be influenced by the hypocrites on the Right?

Obama is attempting to heal the incredible rift between left and right. We will not survive if we are at each others throats. I do not like it, but I do think it is a good idea. Reaching across the aisle is not a bad thing. If we are to heal as a nation, it has to be done.

247. Why are people here so surprised?
I voiced objections to his pandering to that bunch of bigoted, intolerant jerks almost a year ago. I was told to STFU, because Obama can do no wrong and doesn't MEEEEAN it. He was just "pandering" to get votes. Not to worry!!

Well, Kirbyjon Caldwell and Donnie McClurkin showed us that he DOES mean it. They showed us a YEAR ago. Now Rick Warren is showing us again, just in case we didn't get the hint the first time.

How many times do people have to be hit over the head? This guy is a center-right type, to the left of Bush, certainly, but not by as much as many were hoping. He's not "change" and the DLC isn't in charge or bullying him about, either (an absurd suggestion, that). He's got his own agenda, he wants to consolidate power and shut up any detractors that have clout and can cause him agita, and he's in charge.

You can't go blaming anyone else but the guy with the title who won the election--he's NOT a "victim," he's the BOSS. And the boss is throwing our Queer as Folk friends and relatives under the bus.

He doesn't HAVE to pander. He's got a healthy legislative majority and a reasonably decent "mandate." So why IS he pandering? This isn't "reaching out," -- it's an active affirmation of his long-held beliefs; beliefs that became apparent during his South Carolina Gospel Tour during the primary. He's making SURE that the point is MADE.

He is not to blame, though, for "deceiving" his acolytes--Obama straight-out TOLDJA so. He did NOT LIE. He has been honest, if homophobic and bigoted, on this issue ALL ALONG. No one wanted to listen, hear or believe, though, because it didn't match the self-created fiction of a tall, well-tanned, fist-bumping Kucinich-type uber-left superhero that all of the Change-Progressives had created in their own mind.

The Next Big Mistake he's making is shoving Caroline Shlossberg down the nation's throat. That's a real lead balloon, that. I hope he makes the call and allows the NY governor to pull back on that lousy, nepotistic choice. If he's gonna pick a Kennedy, pick RFK JR--at least he's done some "real" work.

I wish the Democratic Party would get out of the habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I also wish they'd stick to the party platform. It helps the "enthusiasm" quotient.

255. It is, but . . .
And not only is one of my closest friends gay I have gay family members and am somewhat echoing their sentiments.

While no one on "our side" likes this, let's wait and see what Obama does on the issues. He's proven himself to be a genius and handling the opposition. If this kind of thing gets us liberal judges on SCOTUS, passage of the Act that codifies Roe v. Wade (mind just went blank on the name), and support of gay issues . . . well . . . we can take this.

Remember, the Right's BIGGEST mistake was immediate overreaching which has killed the GOP. Not saying we should be cautious, BUT, well, let's give it all some time to play out.

261. On the other hand...
OBAMA: "It’s important for America to come together, even though we may have disagreements on certain social issues. And I would note that a couple of years ago, I was invited to Rick Warren’s church to speak, despite his awareness that I held views entirely contrary to his when it came to gay and lesbian rights, when it came to issues like abortion.

What we have to do is be able to create an atmosphere where we can disagree without being disagreeable and then focus on those things that we hold in common as Americans" (Think Progress).

Obama's base is America. Get it? That's what Change looks like. Give the man time to lay his groundwork. It isn't necessarily going to be your agenda, but it's more likely to pave the way for it. Obama understands that spitting on one's enemies has never changed anyone's mind. We all benefit in an environment of civility and mutual respect for disparate views. Someone has to be the first to offer the olive branch. If a year from now the nation hasn't begun to swing toward more progressive positions you can say "I told you so," but until then your fickle fair-weather lack of support helps no one, including yourself.

For the reasons stated all over the place. But there's one more.

289. I voted for exclusion
I voted to exclude certain ideas from government, to exclude the people promoting those ideas from having access and influence, from having a platform, from being given any legitimacy at all.

I voted to exclude bigotry.

I voted to exclude torture.

I voted to exclude war crimes.

I voted to exclude corporate domination of the government.

I voted to exclude off-shoring of wealth and jobs.

I voted to exclude bailing out the wealthy and powerful.

I voted to exclude Reaganomics.

I voted to exclude privatization.

I voted to exclude the war on the poor.

I voted to exclude the destruction of organized Labor.

I voted to exclude profiteering on medicine and food.

I voted to exclude neglect of the homeless and the suffering.

I believe this is what the people voted for, as well.

"Inclusion" means welcoming in those who have been previously excluded, not welcoming in those who have dominated the media and the government for years.
