Thanks to DU for helping Sugar Bear get the surgery she needs!
I am really excited to see that Sugar Bear's fund is up to $740 so I wanted to start a new thread to say THANKS DU!!!

Here's the story that came out on another thread from DU's Corgigal...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4646320#4649046

"I'm just trying to raise some funds for my dog to have surgery. I have applied to 7 different organizations that claim they assist with vets bill but no one has any funds right now. It's not housing or food but she's my bestest friend and I'm worried about her. Here's the link if anyone is curious, all info is provided."

https://www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2008-12-05.7585270548

"My family and I are worried about Sugar Bear’s health. She has large mammary tumors that was recently found in her mammary glands and must be surgically removed in order to give her a better chance at life. Sugar Bear can still live 6 more years or longer with treatment.

The cost for her operation is estimated to be between approximately $800.00 and $1,200.00 -see vet’s estimate at http://hogsten.net/sugarbear...

Although we have been able to afford regular upkeep and veterinary care for Sugar Bear – We currently have little to no means to pay for her surgery. My husband is retired/disabled (line of duty) and we live on a fixed income.

Sugar Bear has been a part of our family since 2001 and she is very dear to us. She is my shadow and a gentle companion who gives my husband and children a sense of security. Sugar Bear’s life with us is a good one - she has known what it is like to live comfortably inside a home, with plenty of food and water, a soft bed of her own, and lots of love and attention – Plus she loves a good tummy rub!...

As soon as the funds are available, Sugar Bears' vet will be able to perform the operation and relieve her of the tumor."

3. I hope the money can be raised. Thanks to friends at DU.
I say this even though I have no money for my own surgery but have a shadow dog and totally understand. Good luck and blessings for a speedy recovery.

4. My dog of 13 years got cancer
She may have been able to live a few more years if she had gotten her leg amputated. I certainly understand loving a dog. I also understand priorities and saving a dog's life over a human's is not the right priority. It never will be.

6. That's why people post their opinions
They certainly don't post in support of somebody else's priorities. The amount of money spent on animals is ridiculous when people are dying. I have felt that way for a long time. That's not to say people shouldn't have pets and get them medicine, etc. But sometimes it is just time to say good-bye.

7. Sorry, my pets
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 10:42 PM by flvegan
would be much like my kids if I had kids. Can't put a price tag on them. Sorry they're just mere possessions to you.

9. I have kids, grandkids and pets
Believe me, I would never put a pet's life over my kids or grandkids - and neither would you or anybody else on this board. When you stop and put it in that perspective, then you know I'm right and nobody's pet should live when somebody's child is dying.

12. Don't know why it would be a choice.
You know, a choice, much like one made by someone that chose to come onto a thread like this and shit all over it.

Enjoy "being right".

13. Money doesn't grow on trees
And in these economic times, somebody has got to step up and call on people to be more judicious about prioritizing help.

15. Agreed, and in the spirit of consistency
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 11:06 PM by flvegan
why not head into Skinner's thread for the fundraiser for food and shit on that too. Considering that's not necessarily supporting people who are dying, I expect to see your post there telling him and all of DU just how fucking stupid they are for not prioritizing help for folks that are actually, literally on their deathbeds in need of medicine or health care?

Here's a link to help you out:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4660895&mesg_id=4660895

Otherwise, you're just being an inconsistent asshole.

Yep, I said it, donation nazi. Check my post about charity above. More "judicious" my fucking ass.

I said humans should come before animals. What's so complicated about that?

19. But, but, but the priority.
Are they saving dying people? No.

So, chalk it up to "inconsistent asshole" then? Okay, done.

20. Animals are healing for humans
The Meals on Wheels program is starting to deliver food for pets as well because they realize the importance of animals in people's lives.

22. Yeah, I thought you'd beg off. I leave you with this.
How dare you. Companion animals ARE medicine to people. You don't think of the people that love and care for this animal. By supporting the care of this animal you ARE buying medicine for them.

Here's a quote from the OP:
Sugar Bear has been a part of our family since 2001 and she is very dear to us. She is my shadow and a gentle companion who gives my husband and children a sense of security.

This quote is in regards to another longtime DUer and her disabled (during active duty) husband. Looks like you were indeed wrong.

Open your mind when you think of others. Who the fuck are you to tell folks what to do with their money when you don't even understand the charitable ask you're shitting on.

Choke on it.

Who the hell presumes to tell other people what their priorities are and who and what they can and can't donate their own money to? Fucking bass ackwards nitwits assuming that giving to one thing "robs" another.

14. Well considering I don't have kids
or grandkids and never will, my animals are my children and I treat them as a member of the family.

I don't have any other obligations that would keep me from spending money on their medical care if needed.

24. If you believe in free speech...
Why did you write me a nasty Private Message and then block me from responding?

I started a thread to ask how we can help DUers in need, and we got two people who responded that we could actually help. I would like to set something up to help more DUers but Skinner has not responded to my request for permission.

11. I was SO happy to see the total when I checked back in!
My furkids are the only kids I will ever have, and I would do whatever it takes to care for them. I could really relate with the wish to be able to pay for the surgery, and I can't wait to hear that she is all better and happy as ever. :pals:

I always think about how DUers gave Obama's campaign over $100,000...most of which was then given to the Corporate media....

Imagine how much good that could do spreading it around our DU community.
