I kind of miss being called a faggot.
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 05:43 AM by Bluebear
12 year old (and 20 year old and 40 year old) bullies have always been around to call somebody who is different their cruel names. We have all gotten over that. Now I am told that I can't marry the love of my life, who I have been with for 23 years, have been through the death of our parents with, have been through illness, losing pets, 9/11, everything else with - - -because marrying him would be the same thing as child molesting. According to Rick Warren. Obama's friend who will be praying to Jesus at the inauguration.

What were you thinking, Barack? That "reaching out" to those with different (hateful) thought processes is important, according to your slick press release defending the decision? That's what I heard about Donnie McClurkin, with his "God delivered meeeeee! From homosexualityyyyyyyy!!!!" monologue, delivered at a Barack Obama event in October of '07. I was told it was only one song (lie), that things would change once Obama won (lie, evidently)....

"1 man + 1 woman has been the definition of marriage for 5,000 years" says Warren. Hate speech? No, thats just what you call a lie. Who's redefining marriage now? It was the law of California until Prop 8.

If you called me a faggot, would that be hate speech? Well, yes. Would it be worse than being called a child molester? If those are the choices, I will take "faggot" back. Although I would prefer my civil rights back first. And not to have somebody who calls me a child molester being given the national stage on a day that I had been looking forward to celebrating.

1. Happy Holidays BlueBear
this is, apparantly, the change we can believe in. Personally, i had very low hopes for Obama to make a difference when it came to my civil rights. he has met those hopes in spades. The next 4 years will be more of the same when it comes to gay rights - once again, we were told to shut up until after the election because our "rights' were not as important as electing Obama. Once again, it is not "our time".

Fuck them all - including Obama - for thinking we will just accept continued second class citizenship

BHO should be ashamed of himself.

peace

I heard that word being used in that way in the UK. Over here it's really only still used for bits of wood/kindling and some sort of sausage they sell in fish & chips shops up north - bit like haggis apparently.

word in its literal meaning.

Here, you risk getting your lights punched out throwing that word around.

25. I wouldn't use it in the USA
I'd never use a word elsewhere if I knew it had an alternative derogatory meaning - I'm not that insensitive.

There have been other issues in the past with our different accepted use of words. Over here , for example , Orientals are proud to be refered to as such because it distinguishes them from Asians which in our case we use for Indian sub-continent only. Similarly over there you use Paki which here is highly derogatory and could easily result in a smack in the mouth.

26. Hmmm.. I've never heard of Paki.....I do know over here, you're
right, it's disrespectful to call Asian-Americans, "Orientals," even though the older generations still use that word.

And I too would never use a word elsewhere unless I knew it was proper.

I love learning from friends abroad.

9. Don't believe that for one minute.
Rick Warren is his friend. A long time friend. Barack wrote about their friendship in his book "The Audacity of Hope". This pick is pure Obama.

I only hope that SOMEONE has the "audacity" to tell him that this is a huge political mistake, that something should "come up" and Rick won't be able to attend for "personal reasons". Perhaps even read a few posts like the one from our fellow DUer BlueBear. Let him see the hurt he is causing.

No one says he can't be friends with this asshole, Warren. But Obama shouldn't put him in a place of honor on the day of his inauguration, an inauguration made possible by the thousands of us who donated, phone banked, and voted for him. Hundreds of thousands.

12. The thing I like about the DU is....
the education I get from folks like you, Bluebear. I didn't really have a strong opinion on the Rick Warren benediction issue when I first heard of it. I honestly thought that it might be a good political move. I can see where that was a very stupid thought and I'm embarrassed it crossed my mind.

I'm beginning to get very angry about this.

Thanks for helping me, slowly but surely, see the light.

homophobe and misogynist--which he is..... it remains that he is horrendously IGNORANT.

1 man + 1 woman has been the definition of marriage for 5,000 years" says Warren. Uhh, no... The bible is replete with polygamy, with adultery vis-a-vis a servant girl when the "wife" is barren, and heaven knows what else....

Maybe, just maybe someone will call one of these "biblical scholars" on the fact they don't have a clue what is contained in the bible. :eyes:

86. How about polygamy in Utah?
There are fundamentalist Mormon sects in Utah that still practice polygamy even today. The members believe that what they are doing is God's will.

I don't much care what living arrangements some Mormons choose for themselves, but it makes their church's concern about the sanctity of marriage in California seem particularly weird, given what's going on under their very noses in Utah.

BTW: I've never understood the mathematics of polygamy. If the human M/F ratio is pretty close to 1/1, and 1 Mormon man can have 5 wives, then what are the other 4 men supposed to do? Move to California and set up housekeeping?

This would all be hysterically funny except that real people are having their lives messed with by these guardians of "morality".

23. Well said
Obama is showing yet again that he is a prejudiced and not very empathetic person. All that work, for nothing.
He is holding the coat of a man who is hurling slanders at us. Lies and vicious accusations. A man who is a political activist working against gay people and women with a fury.
There is a song by They Might Be Giants, about being at a party and seeing friend there with his racist friend. I dedicate the lyrics to Deacon Obama:

It was the loveliest party that I've ever attended
If anything was broken I'm sure it could be mended
My head can't tolerate this bobbing and pretending
Listen to some bullet-head and the madness that he's saying

This is where the party ends
I'll just sit here wondering how you
Can stand by your racist friend
I know politics bore you
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you
You and your racist friend

He is wrong about Proposition 8 and I disagree with people who are opposed to allowing gay marriage or civil unions. His political ideology would not necessarily translate into being rude toward you, and calling a gay person a faggot is always rude, whether it's considered hate speech or not.

It was shouted out the window by four guys in a passing car in downtown Palm Springs (of all places). I was a little scared because it was dark and I was walking with a friend who was disabled at the time and couldn't have defended himself had they decided to stop and act on their hate (thank you Christian churches).

Let me tell you Bluebear, it's not as nostalgic as you might think.

walking in West Hollywood one night a couple years ago. My husband was a dog-sitter at the time, and his friend went to the job with him because they were going to a show afterwards. A carload of idiots drove by, slowed, asked for directions and after they began to drive away, shouted "Fags and Fuckin' homos" out the window. My husband was stupified and felt horribly for guys who actually ARE gay. He said he wished they'd gotten out of the car...he was pissed (my uncle and mom are gay). Very strange.

was, until relatively recently, that a father owned his daughter and then chose a husband for her who would own her. I'm not all that fond of the thousands of years old definition of marriage, personally.

I'm sure he could have found another white Christian male to give the speech if that's what he wanted to do to make conservative people feel included. He didn't have to choose one who is so hateful. :(

55. And I Miss Being Called An Independent
I will make it official tomorrow and renew my registration accordingly.
After (ironically) 23 years of being called a Democrat, I just can't be associated with a party that gives such honers to the purveyors of hatred and is so dismissive of the concept of equal civil liberties that I believe to be the intent of the Constitution that I honor, believe in and owe my national loyalty to.

It is the same reason I can never let myself be called a Republican.

Funny how the centrists always meet at this type of "middle ground".

Stay strong and long with your love my friend. When we find a way to force our leaders to follow that god-damn piece of paper you will marry who you love.

58. ((((Bluebear))))
It is a crying shame that Obama picked Warren!

I am always trying to rationalize and justify.... I hope Obama did not know that Warren was such a Right Wing BIGOT and an unkind fool!

It is those wolves in SHEEP's clothing you gotta watch out for, especially when they have MEGA Churches and MEGA BUCKS.

If Obama wants to set this SHIP of State in the right direction, he better steer LEFT.

We are snowed in over here ... how about you?

59. BB, I love you. And I'm with you.
You know, I'm kind of angry with myself for expecting him to at least wait until he got sworn in to shove his thumb in our eyes. I voted for him, even phone banked for him, despite knowing this is what he really was. I knew when the McClurkin shit went down. When all that "sweetie" bullshit went down. But I still held my nose, and even managed to get excited. I cried when he won, I cried with my brothers and sisters of the diaspora and then I cried again for an entirely different reason once the California returns started coming in. I had to listen to my friend cry on the phone and tell me it looks like she didn't need me to stand with her on a beach when she married her girlfriend after all.

Someone said it best yesterday. Change we can make believe in.

I'm angry, so fucking angry I can't see straight, but at the heart of it is just plain grief. I am full of so much sorrow. We lose our friends, our family. I saw Milk last night and cried. I still can't stop crying about Maddie. I want to give up and then I think of Harvey Milk, whose name is on the GED I got via the school named for him, that took me in when I wanted to kill myself. And I think of all those patches on the quilt, so many patches. Seems like every step forward we make we get knocked back a mile. It makes me wonder what all this is for. But I can't stop fighting no matter how much it hurts or how much I don't understand why people can be so fucking hateful over something so beautiful and precious as love.

And gods, for some reason I'm the person other people come to for answers, what with that "priestess" label that got stuck on me some time back. Fancy that.

66. I'm really sorry with what you have gone through
with the prop 8 bullshit and now this insult.

I'm white and my first husband was black. We got married back in 1974 and it was pretty scary to be in an inter-racial marriage back then. Not long before it had been illegal to marry someone of a different race. We had a son in 1975, born in Washington DC. When I was pregnant we used to drive by the Capitol and White House almost everyday and I used to put my hand on my belly and wonder if my son could ever be President of the United States. Imagine my joy when another mothers inter-racial son became president.

When I think of what Obama's mother went through to marry his dad and raise him I'm so disappointed he doesn't seem to understand that discrimination is so painful and keeping someone from marrying their true love is just plain wrong.

68. We in San Jose get called faggots just about every weekend...
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 01:52 PM by keepCAblue
Just about every weekend here in San Jose, "Craig's Army" -- those of us who "serve" in Craig Person's Banner Brigade go and stand at busy intersections with BIG signs declaring our rights, dignity and demand for equality, including the repeal of Prop 8. And just about every weekend we get screamed at and called "faggots" by red-faced, finger-flinging drivers as they pass -- most always adult white males, the kind that drive big ass pickups with oversized wheels. I call it a drive-by hate crime. Yes, homophobia, bigotry and pathological hatred are alive and well here in San Jose, in spite of the fact that our county (Santa Clara) voted by majority to defeat prop 8. Two weekends ago someone even called the San Jose PD to report that we were blocking the intersection, disrupting traffic and using a bullhorn to harass motorists. The officer who responded sat and observed us for an hour at which time he approached our group's organizer, Craig Person, and shook his hand, saying he saw nothing wrong at all with our peaceful assembly. He then complimented Craig on how beautiful the banners were...and left. Obviously the person or persons who complained to the police were lying and making up crap just to get the police to respond. This is typical of *those people* which is why we've seen so much crap in the news about our "violent" protests.

BTW, I'm a lesbian, but to these name-calling neanderthals I guess we're all faggots, regardless of gender. And when they sling that hate-name, implicit in its meaning, buried just beneath the surface of the word itself, is that faggot = pedophile, pervert, bestiality, and every other filthy, debauched thought that so obsessively preoccupies the minds of these morons. So you shouldn't miss being called a "faggot" because, honestly, in the context of that awful word's spewers, it means exactly what Rick Warren equates we gays to.

69. Stick around here for a while longer and it will probably come out in posts, especially if
more "whining" about Warren continues. It is abundantly clear that "some animals (including protected classes) are more equal than others" and thus, more deserving of protection under the law.

the cause of gay equal rights has been thrown years ahead because of prop 8. Those stupid fucks didn't have a clue what a fire they were lighting.

From your post to the FSM's ears, Tavalon. If Obama thinks he has to reach out to the fundies, surely he could have found someone less hateful.

And sure, go ahead and move across the country so you have the right to marry. Then hope that right isn't taken away in your new state. Oh well, I guess you could always just live in a bus so you can pick up and live in whatever state is willing to recognize your marriage this week. Just like women who want an abortion can easily drive hundreds of miles to get one, or shop around for a pharmacist whose "conscience" will allow her to get her birth control pills.

We're tired of the fundies saying "I don't approve of this so you can't do it." Well, I don't approve of fundie assholes deciding how other people live their lives.

Holiday hugs, Bluebear and partner. ((((())))) I hope you two bundles of kindling have a warm and cozy Christmas, and a New Year full of new possibilities.

84. My 8 year old grandson asked me, Granddaddy do you think that everyone should be able to marry
whoever they want?" "yes," I said, "I do. Why do you ask?" "Well," he said, "I don't think it's fair not to let everyone marry the person they love and in California they just took that right away from gays." "Do you know who gays are?" I asked. "Yes," he said, " They are men who love men or women who love women and I don't think it is fair that they can't marry the person they love."

I am so proud of his parents.

80. This 6'2" big gay guy doesn't let anyone call him a "faggot".
I used my fist a lot in my teens and early 20's.

That was then, but I won't tolerate the word.

I sure hope that some of the latent homophobia here continues to expose itself. I've learned a lot in the last few days here.

Thank you Bluebear for your on target comments. You are the real deal. ---DZ
