Attorney General Michael Mukasey has decided to recuse himself from any Justice Department investigations involving fraud allegations against the Bernard L. Madoff because the attorney general’s son, Mark Mukasey, is a defense lawyer representing a figure in the probe, the Justice Department said Wednesday.

Mark Mukasey, a former federal prosecutor who heads the white-collar defense section at the law firm of Bracewell & Giuliani, is representing Frank DiPiscali, a financial officer at Mr. Madoff’s firm.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the Justice Department in Washington, said that the attorney general, once he learned of his son’s involvement in the case, decided to bow out of any decisions involving the future course of the case.
