The United Nations says 33 countries are in need of food aid as a result of war, floods, crop failures or high domestic food prices.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says the majority of those countries - 20 - are in Africa, 10 in Asia and three in Latin America.

The Rome-based agency said in a report released Thursday that an estimated 5.1 million people in Zimbabwe may need assistance as the country grapples with worsening economic conditions and an outbreak of cholera. In North Korea an estimated 8.7 million people, or around 40 percent of the population, urgently need food assistance.

The agency has put the overall number of needy at almost 1 billion.

The Republicon Homelanders have set us up for BIG TROUBLE on the whole farm-food thingy. Monsanto, its ilk, and INCOMING allies like corporate knee-bender Vilsack are all too damn likely to take us on a mutant journey to a petro-chemically wanked incarnation of Shortage City...
