Just a quote to ponder on the Warren Issue...
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 12:15 PM by Rosco T.
"You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free".

Extra points for identifying the source.

the "but Johnny started it first crap".

Somebody has to hold their temper and bring the troublemakers to the table.

Somebody has to reject reactionary screaming and work towards a solution where everyone is respectful of their neighbors.

hard work necessary to START the process.

The process is started by the grown ups who realize they are the only ones capable of rational thought.

And rational thought means realizing you have to put your emotional reactions on hold and initially put up with people who despise you.

7. This isn't about free speech...
It is about a bigot holding a place of honor at a celebration/ritual for the new leaders we voted for.

8. Warren has enough outlets for his insipid views...
his right to free speech is not being infringed upon.

Your quote is meaningless in the context of Warren giving the Inaugural invocation.

10. So Warren doesn't have "free speech?" Hmmm.
I don't think so. I'm afraid you've missed the point.

He can say all the hateful things he wants to.

The point is why give him a place of honor at an inauguration?

13. Don't you see? If he has no role in the inauguration his free speech is being denied!
Now what that means about the millions of people without such a role I can't guess.

15. Delivering the invocation
at the inauguration has nothing to do with free speech. No one has ever denied Warren's right to free speech. Free speech does not mean special privilege.
